  • About the position

    The John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research (JRC) was established in 2007 with funding from John Richards OAM, Department of Health and Human Services Victoria and La Trobe University. The JRC team consists of 27 staff and affiliates as well as 8 higher degree research students across all La Trobe campuses. The incumbent will provide research assistance to various projects led by the JRC team and JRC Chair/Director. In collaboration with external and other stakeholders, the JRC undertakes an interdisciplinary rural ageing and aged program of research in the following areas:

  • Aged Care and Dementia
  • Ageing in place
  • Health Service and Workforce
  • Technology
  • The JRC is part of La Trobe Rural Health School (LHRS) which is the largest rural health school in Australia. LRHS is based at all four regional campuses of the University: Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Albury-Wodonga. The school has a wide range of health courses including dentistry, oral health, nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, public health, pharmacy, biomedical sciences (onshore and offshore), physiotherapy, social work, speech pathology, exercise physiology, exercise science and occupational therapy.

    This Level A research position will be primarily attached to an externally- funded project which spans the “Health Service and Workforce” and the “Aged Care and Dementia” streams. One of the primary objectives of the project is to evaluate the following program: Health Workforce Program: Expansion of the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Programme in Aged Care Services. Secondary objectives include a review of factors impacting on recruitment to positions in the Aged Care sector.

    The position requires skills and experience in conducting research, evaluation and/or consultation activities (using qualitative and descriptive quantitative methods), and in analysing research and evaluation data.

    The position will involve, but not be restricted to:

    • Undertake project administration and preparation activities under the direction of project managers.

    • Liaise with health, aged care and community stakeholders to organise research and evaluation activities.

    • Occasional travel to research sites (Mildura and Beaufort) to conduct research and evaluation fieldwork activities.

    • Analyse data from current research projects using qualitative and descriptive quantitative methods, under the direction of project managers.

    • Prepare academic publications for submission from JRC projects, in collaboration with project managers and staff.

    • Contribute to the development of grant applications in the field of rural ageing where required.

    • Attend project and centre meetings where required.

    Skills and Experience

    To be considered for this position, you will have

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline (health, social sciences and/or community development), and evidence of participation in higher level study relevant to discipline or professional area.
  • Evidence of experience in conducting research and evaluation and the ability to work effectively under limited supervision or independently.
  • A record of contribution to publications, conference papers and/or reports, or professional or technical contributions which provide evidence of research potential.
  • Experience in the analysis of qualitative data, including the capacity to integrate data from a range of sources and of uneven quality.
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising with diverse community stakeholders to conduct research, evaluation and/or consultation activities.
