  • About This Opportunity

    This position involves a high level of practical responsibility coupled in part with administration activities and is required to give substantial support to the Manager, Hidden Vale Research Station (HVRS) to cover a variety of duties.

    Key responsibilities will include:

  • Perform and support field-based services for user groups and the general operation of HVRS within a potentially wide span of work hours.

  • Assist with the overall management of HVRS including supervising the undertakings of staff, students, and volunteers conducted at or from HVRS.

  • Liaise with various stakeholders including HVRS/TFF Management, internal UQ Committees and Departments, research personnel, and users as required to maintain and enhance HVRS operations.

  • Carry out station inductions and associated Work Health and Safety duties for all users including training staff, researchers, and students.

  • Assist with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures and risk assessments.

  • Manage record keeping in relation to scientific services, including development of research metrics reports, equipment management and Drug, Chemical and sample registers.

  • Work as an effective team member, encouraging a team approach in line with the HVRS operations.

  • Provide details and input for HVRS/TFF Management on any maintenance and repair services required to laboratories and research areas, including field sites.

  • Develop and manage processes and strategies that strengthen compliance with safe working procedures and Environmental policy.

  • Prepare and maintain equipment, instruments, demonstrations, and any other technical materials needed to support HVRS user activities as required, and contribute to continuous improvement of operations in line with strategic goals.

  • Provide support to HVRS users as required, including academic staff and research students.

  • This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position through to end of 2027.

    At HEW level 5, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $77,396.47 - $86,029.78, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,553.87 - $100,654.84 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

    About You
  • Completion of a degree or completion of a Diploma with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Detailed knowledge of relevant codes and acts governing the use of animals in research, particularly in the university sector, or ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge.

  • A demonstrated capacity to work within and lead a functioning team, including supervising field and laboratory activities, as well as training and assessing skills acquisition.

  • Demonstrated clear and professional written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to advise facility staff and user groups, present information, and produce quality written reports.

  • Demonstrated decision making and trouble-shooting skills, utilising background information/experience to act in the absence of complete information.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and prioritise own time and tasks and work in an agile and self-sufficient way across different areas of the facility based on general direction from Manager.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the relevant regulatory requirements regarding Animal Ethics, Biosecurity and Occupational Health and Safety.

  • Commitment to upholding the University's values, and with the outstanding personal qualities of openness, respectfulness, and integrity.

  • Practical research skills and experience in relevant research methodology or techniques relevant to wildlife science, wildlife biology, or zoology highly desirable.

  • Medical Clearance: Working with small animals is an inherent requirement of the position. The appointment is therefore subject to, and conditional upon, satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to your health and safety. In addition, the Employee is required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures associated with the position.
