The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at Concord University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology beginning August 7, 2023. The position requires the ability to teach an introductory course in physical and environmental geology with affiliated laboratory sections for Concord's General Education program, environmental geoscience majors, and science education majors. An opportunity to develop and teach a second-semester course in historical or environmental geology for geoscience and science education majors is possible in the spring semester. Applications are open to any subfield of geosciences. A Ph.D. in geology or a closely related field is expected, although applicants who are ABD may be considered.
Concord University is a public institution with an enrollment of approximately 1800 students. The University is located in a scenic, small-town setting in the mountains of southern West Virginia with access to year-round outdoor recreation activities. The Department offers degree programs in environmental geosciences and chemistry, and a minor in physics. The Department values and actively supports innovative teaching and participation in undergraduate research and seeks candidates with similar ideals. We maintain a diverse array of instrumentation for teaching and undergraduate research, including an observatory, electron microprobe, micro-XRF, GPR, a GIS lab, facilities for analytical chemistry, and a sample preparation laboratory. Department faculty lead or co-lead numerous externally funded projects in geology and chemistry.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duty/Responsibility
The candidate will be an outstanding teacher capable of preparing and teaching introductory courses as listed in the job summary. The candidate must be a clear communicator and demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching. He/she/they will participate in limited departmental service including public outreach and laboratory oversight. Introductory geology courses normally include two field trips per semester. The teaching load is 12 contact hours per semester.

Education/Knowledge
Minimum Education DoctorateRequired Licenses/Certification
Doctorate in geology or a closely related field; ABD candidates who hold an M.S. degree in geology may be considered.
Required Skills
Minimum of two years teaching experience preferred (graduate teaching experience acceptable). The candidate will also demonstrate an ability to maintain a safe environment in teaching laboratories, maintain lab facilities, and effectively use learning management systems. The ability to drive a 15-passenger van for limited local field trips is preferred.
