About The Position:

The division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion leads the campus community to make diversity, equity and inclusion a priority in the way college functions through support of intentional actions. As a division, we are committed to offering a range of programs, policies, and practices that engage with the unique range of human experiences in order to further enrich our campus and community. SUNY Plattsburgh is now host to one of 71 Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation ( TRHT) Campus Centers nationwide and one of two SUNY campuses to be selected for this designation.

Working within the newly established TRHT Center, but also with the Student Health and Counseling Center, this position will work to address the complex trauma of BIPOC students, vulnerable populations, staff and faculty. Specific responsibilities will include providing trauma-informed therapy with a focus on survivors of racial trauma and those who have been impacted by other forms of intersectional trauma including sexual assault, discrimination based upon sexual orientation, gender identity, or transgender status. This position will be responsible for building relationships with emergency and other mental health service professionals and organizations to better support those of marginalized groups; and will be an integral part of training led by the Executive Director that will allow cross-functional campus constituents and allies to participate in and/or facilitate healing circles. This is a one-year grant funded position with the possibility of renewal to two years if ongoing funding is identified.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in mental health counseling, clinical psychology, social services, or a related clinical degree
  • Licensed or License Eligible as a Mental Health Counselor in New York State
  • 1 year of experience with a strong emphasis on direct clinical skills in evidenced based trauma informed treatment
  • Ability to identify and appropriately address trauma, microaggressions and the unique needs of minoritized and marginalized groups as well as victims of violence
  • Experience organizing and facilitating groups
  • Demonstrated experience using evidence-based modes of trauma-informed therapy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with an electronic health record keeping system
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegiality with faculty, staff and administrators
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of individual versus collective cultural worldviews
  • Working knowledge of the TRHT framework
  • Past participation in professional development specific to anti-racism work
  • Proven success in implementing programs that improve student success, belonging and community
  • Previous experience working with college-age students
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

    SUNY Plattsburgh is a destination campus located in northern New York between the iconic Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain. The campus is a short walk from historic downtown Plattsburgh, New York, where area residents have access to a wide array of arts, food, and events throughout the year, and just over a 1 hour car ride from the cities of Burlington, Vermont, Montreal, Quebec, and Lake Placid, New York, which is best known by locals as a former site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
