University Honors College, the only urban-focused honors college in the country, is a small, dedicated community of highly motivated students and engaged professors located within the larger academic environment of Portland State University. The Honors College at PSU provides small, interdisciplinary research-focused general education courses for high achieving undergraduates across campus. Honors students explore an academically intense curriculum through the lens of the culturally rich, ever-evolving city of Portland.

Position Summary

The University Honors College seeks applicants for an academic year, fixed term Teaching Assistant Professor in the Humanities beginning Fall 2023. Candidates with a PhD from a field within the humanities will be considered. Candidates must have a strong background in teaching writing; interest or experience in Honors education is desired but not required. A Ph.D. must be completed by August 30, 2023.

Successful candidates will be able to design writing and reading intensive courses around an inquiry into or topic related to “the urban,” broadly conceived. The position is open in regards to specialization, although we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Black Studies, Indigenous Nations Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, or Ethnic Studies.

This position is teaching intensive with a primary emphasis on disciplinary methodologies and writing instruction. The successful candidate will be ready to assume responsibility for teaching courses focused on close textual analysis, writing and academic literacies, and disciplinary research methods. The Honors College curriculum focuses on the urban environment and the interdependence between the city and the global world. All faculty in Honors teach using a shared set of core assignments focused on fundamental writing and reading concepts; successful candidates will be willing to participate in the college's shared teaching project.

Teaching responsibilities will include a 3/3/3 course load, not to exceed 36 credits per academic year. Courses will include core second year humanities courses, second- and third-year transfer writing courses, and undergraduate thesis support courses in University Honors College.

The position includes an expectation of service activities including taking an active role in matters of college governance as well as participation in tasks associated with the annual Honors Admissions cycle. Responsibilities may include meaningful curricular development or redesign, and/or community-based work. Ability to work with, mentor and advise undergraduate students of diverse populations and participation in departmental, college/ school, or university service are required.

This is not a remote position. All UHC faculty are expected to maintain a regular presence on campus, including attendance of in-person faculty meetings and other in-person meetings and activities.

Primary Activity I - Instructional Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D in a field in the Humanities.
  • Expertise in the teaching and support of scholarly research writing.
  • Expertise in the teaching and support of transfer student writing.
  • Experience in the supervision of student thesis writing.
  • Documented excellence in teaching large and small undergraduate courses in the candidate's field of study.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidate with experience teaching highly motivated students.
  • Experience teaching writing-intensive courses at both lower and upper division levels.

    Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

    The starting annual salary for this position will be $68,751.
