About us The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA's activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and a key participant in the international SKA project. CIRA is also the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), a joint venture with the University of Western Australia.

Your new role The successful candidate will work with the Software and Systems Team (led by Greg Sleap) to manage and maintain servers and networks that support the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope, an SKA (Square Kilometre Array) precursor. The MWA is a global collaboration, led by CIRA, to exploring the farthest reaches of the Universe from the West Australian outback.

The successful candidate will be looking to continue building their sysadmin career in a diverse role within a supportive team environment for an exciting, cutting-edge big data science project: The sysadmin will:

  • Plan, design, configure, deploy and support Linux servers (on premises and cloud).
  • Plan, design, configure, deploy and support networking hardware and infrastructure.
  • Implement audit requirements related to system access and security.
  • Maintain documentation for all servers and networks.
  • Assist with maintenance and monitoring processes to ensure high availability and security of systems.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with vendors, DTS, CSIRO, Pawsey and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain a suitable level of knowledge of supported technologies and the use of relevant tools to enable effective service delivery.
  • Undertake other activities which the incumbent might reasonably be expected to do, and which are consistent with the accountabilities and responsibilities as listed above.

    Essential Criteria:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in information technology / computer science or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated experience in Linux server/system administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with networking.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to liaise with colleagues and stakeholders to resolve system issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise tasks/ requests to ensure stakeholder needs are met.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated effective written communication skills with the ability to construct documentation and articulate information clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • A level of fitness commensurate with the position.
  • Interstate and/or overseas travel may be required.
  • Ability to work outside of normal office hours when required.
  • Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience with Red Hat and/or Ubuntu Linux.
  • Experience with server virtualisation technologies.
  • Any Cisco Certification would be regarded highly.

    You will require work rights in Australian that match the tenure of this role, and you must be willing to relocate to Perth, Western Australia for the duration of the position.
