Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology works hard to make sure that campus technology works smoothly for everyone-from students and faculty to alumni and visitors.Our dedication to technological advances, computer protection and information management make it possible for the university to run efficiently.

The Learning and Event Technologies Student Technician reports to the Learning and Event Technology Specialists. This position aids the Learning and Event Technologies team by providing audio, visual, and technical assistance for classrooms and on-campus events. Occasionally, you will aid in supporting, troubleshooting, and finding solutions for classrooms, venue spaces, and other technology-enabled spaces around campus.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide positive customer experience for technology support for Learning and Event activities on campus.
  • Assist the Learning and Event Technologies team in providing classroom and event technical support, including audio, video, lighting and rigging support for events; operating sound and light boards; and setup, troubleshooting, and teardown of equipment.
  • Setup, operate, troubleshoot and teardown sound, video and lighting equipment for events without professional staff assistance.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of parts and equipment and perform routine checks related to learning and event spaces.
  • Cover the classroom phone in the evenings, troubleshoot classroom technology issues in classroom spaces, aid professors, and guide them through solutions as needed without professional staff assistance.
  • Maintain knowledge of hardware, software, diagnostic tools, and computer applications to support learning and event spaces.
  • Seek out and attend trainings with the Learning and Event Technology Specialists to increase knowledge of learning and event spaces.
  • Use multiple resources (i.e., technical books and manuals, Internet web sites) to resolve problems.
  • Train and support fellow student staff to enable them to execute the technical elements of various events and classroom support, if applicable.
  • Aid in special projects as deemed relevant and be available as needed for technical and other support during critical periods.
  • Provide back-up support to other members of the team in case of absence or work overload.
  • Provide back-up support/assist with tasks for other teams in the Information Technology department as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • The Learning and Event Technologies Student Technician are expected to respect IT security and confidentiality requirements.

    Location On SU campus in the IT department

    Available hours: This position requires the ability to work flexible hours around your class schedule, primarily evening and weekend hours

    Experience No experience is required. Will sponsor a work visa and accepts OPT/CPT

    Physical Demand

    Work is performed on campus. Position requires primarily on-location work setting up equipment which requires physical mobility, occasionally climbing into fly space over stage and auditorium; moving staging, lighting, and sound equipment; and climbing stairs and ladders. Ability to talk and to hear instruction. Requires occasional manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach, as well as the occasional sitting, walking, stooping, crouching, and bending. Position requires the ability to move about the campus. Position requires the ability to occasionally lift 50+ pounds.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in audio recording, live sound engineering, theatre lighting, theatre studies, music and/or customer service is preferred.
