The Role

Student Life is looking for Student Assistants to assist with the creation and implementation of student leadership programming as well as working to support other related Student Life events and activities.

Responsibilities

- Supporting the creation and implementation of all student leadership programming and events - Assist with creating learning outcomes and programming through consultation with students and campus partners - Overseeing event registration and participant communication - Meet regularly with Student Life Coordinator

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

- Has been a Douglas College student for at least one academic year

- Has been involved on campus (e.g.; is in a club or student group, has volunteered or worked as a student assistant)

- Has some experience or knowledge in event planning

- Has the ability to deal with issues with maturity and thoughtfulness as they arise

- Is detail-oriented, organized, responsible, professional and flexible

- Is comfortable and has the ability to work with limited supervision

- Has an open mind to cultures, practices, and sexual orientations different from your own

- Has excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills - Is committed to inclusion and is culturally sensitive to the unique challenges of diverse student groups

- Has the flexibility to work at either campus (New Westminster and the Coquitlam Campus)

- Has a basic working knowledge of Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint

- Has experience in event planning (desired)

- Has leadership experience (desired)

Domestic students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant: 1. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR

2. The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR

3. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term; OR

4. The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post- secondary institution in B.C. in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the institution in the term immediately following the work term

International students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant: 1. The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year; OR

2. The international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation – “May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.” Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

An original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College.

Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.

    Douglas College, founded in the year 1970, is one of the largest public degree-granting colleges located in British Columbia, Canada. Douglas College offers degree and university courses in science and arts, programs in healthcare, business, arts, and human services. The institute boasts of two campuses, the main one in New Westminster and the other is the David Liam Campus suburban campus in Coquitlam as well as several smaller training centres in Surrey, Burnaby and Maple Ridge.

    The college provides both on-campus and off-campus housing options to the students. They have an extensive library with books and DVDs, articles, research help guides for the students. There is also a Douglas Open Repository, or DOOR, that is a collection of research and creative assets of the college.

The academic staff consists of around 960 members.

    The college offers as many as 10 bachelor's degree programs in Applied Psychology Psychiatric Nursing, Physical Education and Coaching, Business Administration, Nursing, Therapeutic, Child and Youth Care, Recreation Performing Arts, Criminology and Social Work.

    The Douglas College has catered alumni that have excelled in their career paths. Some of the notable alumni of the Douglas college include poet Elizabeth Bachinsky, author Carleigh Baker for short story collection Bad Endings, businessman Frank Guistra, Gold medalist wrestler in Olympic, Daniel Igali, actor Adrian Holmes, and author Sky Lee.
