CEU Library at Central European University invites applications for a part- time (20 hours/week) student assistant position.

The CEU Library contains the largest English-language holdings in the social sciences and humanities in Central and Eastern Europe. While its main responsibility is to serve the CEU community, its high-quality services are also offered to the academic public in Vienna and beyond. The CEU Library and Media Hub spaces in the Vienna campus holds approximately 40.000 books and offers individual and group study spaces, as well as media creation, copy, and scanning facilities. A second library in Budapest contains approximately 120.000 books that are sometimes requested for use in Vienna. The rich electronic and print collections support the humanities, social sciences, business, law, and public policy.

Your key responsibilities:

- Reading Hall

  • Desk duty (with one librarian always in the office to answer more complex questions)
  • Shelf maintenance: Reshelving documents and shelf reading
  • Filling internal usage statistics
  • Keeping the Reading Room tidy
  • Feeding the copy machines and refill the staplers.
  • Emptying the book return and checking the printer for hold slip
  • Collecting books for the shuttle box and emptying
  • Searching for missing books (Once a week)
  • Scanning book chapters when requested by patrons via email
  • Assisting with physical order of journals and loose-leafs
  • - Cataloguing

  • Receiving new books, scanning invoices
  • Putting stamp and barcode into new books
  • Searching records in remote catalogs for copy-cataloging for new books
  • RFID-tagging new books
  • Printing spine labels, labeling new books, replacing damaged labels on old books
  • Notifying patrons about urgent books
  • Re-shelving new books in the Reading Room
  • Assisting in re-arranging in the Reading Room and adjusting the shelf- signs if necessary
  • Weeding damaged books
  • - ILL process

  • Packing and posting materials (books to be returned)
  • Assisting in IFLA voucher administration
  • Scanning invoices
  • Scanning book chapters requested via ILL
  • - E-resources

  • Checking excel lists for active online access
  • - Other duties as assigned

    Your skills and experience:

  • Language skills (English): Advanced level
  • Microsoft Office skills (MS Excel, Word, PPT): Medium level
  • Presentation skills (public speaking, creating slides): Medium level
  • People support / quality focus: Medium level
  • Requirements:

  • University entrance qualification
  • Desirable is experience in an academic environment
  • What CEU offers:

    We offer a competitive salary starting from gross 27,972 EUR/year (prorated). A higher salary is possible if warranted by the candidate's working experience.

    The initial contract is for one year with the possibility of renewal.
