Offer Description

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of manufactured chemicals that are widely used to make various types of everyday products. Once ingested or inhaled they accumulate in cell membranes causing disease, including cancer, metabolic, neurological and reproductive disorders. This project aims to continue our previous study in dopaminergic neurons using a human three-dimensional model (organoid) that reproduces the area of the brain richest in this type of neurons, which is involved in the development of Parkinson's disease. The selected candidate will work with state-of-the-art biophysical and biological facilities, including electrophysiology (patch- clamp and multielectrode arrays) and fluorescence microscopy (wide-field, confocal, 2-photon, STED). The project aims to identify structural and functional neuronal network alterations which underlie the toxic effect of PFAS in the midbrain.
