Contract: Part Time (60%)/Fixed Term (12 months)

Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for the position of Commercialisation Lead for a recently funded project on filter and Antenna-in-Package (AiP) modules. You will join a team in the Wireless Communications Laboratory with the explicit aim to commercialise the novel technology on filters and AiP modules through a start-up company. Our primary objective is to bring this exciting new technology to the market in applications for 5G and 6G communications. We anticipate that the successful individual will play a leading role in the company, once it is formed.

An essential element of your role over the first 6-month period will be to engage with potential end-users and customers of this new technology, gain an understanding of how the technology could address their specific needs, establish a product specification sheet and create a market entry plan. An additional priority during the remaining 6 months of the role will be to develop an investible Business Plan, to engage with potential investors and secure seed investment to enable the formation of the start-up company. You will present the technology at international trade shows over the 12-month period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer discovery : Follow up with existing contacts, and engage new ones through marketing, trade shows, company visits and web channels, with the objective of building a sustainable revenue stream for the start-up company.
  • Customer development : Identify detailed requirements on device performance for the specific applications. Establish pricing opportunities and projections on required volumes and potential revenue, and secure initial sales from international customers.
  • Business planning: Develop an investible Business Plan and engage potential investors with the objective of securing sufficient investment to enable the start-up company to be formed at the end of the 12 month period.
  • Support the formation of the start-up company.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • Essential Criteria

  • Extensive (>13 years) experience in Business Development within the wireless and semiconductor sectors.
  • Technical expertise (PhD level) in the design, fabrication and testing of photonic or wireless devices.
  • Demonstrated experience of working with R&D and Product Development teams to establish new products that secured customer sales.
  • Demonstrated experience of international trade shows to engage with customers and secure new sales.
  • Evidence of delivering results impacting revenue growth and profitability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Track record of working to own initiative.
  • Desire to participate in the start-up company.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Experience in the communications sector.
  • Experience of forming and/or scaling a start-up company.
  • Experience of identifying and securing equity investments and/or grant funding for startup businesses.
  • Experience of drafting and/or defending patent applications.

    Appointment may be made on the Senior Research Fellow Scale range €74,589 to €80,046 pa. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
