Senior Research Associate in RF Accelerator Engineering

School of Engineering Location: Bailrigg, Lancaster UK Salary: £38,205 (Full time, indefinite with end date contract) Closing Date: Sunday 28 April 2024 Interview Date: Wednesday 08 May 2024 Reference: 0412-24

Applications are invited for a research associate is sought to participate in the development of ferroelectric fast reactive tuners (FE-FRT) for RF cavities in particle accelerators. The post will be seconded to CERN and belonging to the Engineering Department of Lancaster University and the Cockcroft Institute of Accelerator Science and Technology, based at the Daresbury Laboratory.

Ferroelectric tuners are a cutting-edge development in superconducting RF systems as they allow fast tuning of the cavity frequency without mechanical tuning. The tuner is an external RF circuit where the RF resonance is tuned using a DC bias voltage across a ferroelectric capacitor. This can be used to cancel out microphonic vibrations, to account for a beam reactance or for tuning cavities where mechanical forces may result in surface cracking such as thin-film coated cavities.

The PDRA will join the internationally recognised group of RF engineers working on particle accelerators. The post will involve the design and experimental testing of FE-FRT on SRF cavities at CERN, and electromagnetic simulations/design to support the testing.

Applicants should have a PhD in a RF or Microwaves and experience in electromagnetic component design or testing at RF frequencies.

The appointment will be to university grade 7 and is a fixed term 24 month post.

Initially, the university was based at St. Leonard's Gate. The campus was moved to Bailrigg in South Lancaster in 1968. The university formerly had four colleges namely Cartmel, County, Lonsdale, and Bowland. Grizedale, Fylde, Furness, Pendle, and Graduate colleges were set up after 1990. Currently, it has 9 colleges that offer a total of 18 research programs.

The Lancaster University campus occupies a beautiful 560-acre parkland site at Bailrigg, just three miles from Lancaster city center. It takes 10 minutes to drive to the West Coast Main Line that connects the city to London, Scotland, and Manchester.

The academic structure of the university consists of undergraduate degree programs, postgraduate courses, research, and doctoral level programs. The acclaimed staff of the university guides the students into international level research centered on humanities, business subjects, natural sciences, modern languages, social sciences, and technology. Presently, the university has over 13,000 full-time students enrolled for first and higher degrees. There are 3,027 employees on the university campus including 1,323 faculty members.
