Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) are recruiting a Senior Research Associate to improve understanding of atmospheric ozone and halogen chemistry in the upper troposphere and stratosphere. This is an 18-month post initially.

You will work in the research group of Dr Ryan Hossaini on a NERC-funded project ‘why is lower stratospheric ozone not recovering?'. There is strong observational evidence for a persistent and unexplained ozone decline in the extrapolar lower stratosphere. Suggested hypotheses include (1) ozone destruction by iodine chemistry (previously thought unimportant), evidenced by the surprising recent detection of iodine radicals in the lower stratosphere, (2) chlorine chemistry, including industrial emissions of short-lived chlorinated gases, and/or (3) a contribution from long-term lower stratospheric circulation changes. You will perform a range of numerical modelling activities to understand and detangle some of these effects. Your exact duties will be tailored to best match your skills and experience.

We are looking for a technically proficient scientist with an established track record at solving problems using global atmospheric models. The principal research tools being used by the project consortium include the UKCA/UKESM1 chemistry-climate model, the TOMCAT/SLIMCAT chemical transport model (CTM) and the UCI CTM. Experience of one of these models is desirable but we would like to hear from those with relevant experience of other modelling platforms as there is some flexibility in our approach.

As part of the AtMOS research group (https: //, you will conduct research under the supervision of Dr Ryan Hossaini. Specific activities will include:

  • Develop an up-to-date representation of gas-phase and aerosol halogen processes in a global atmospheric model.
  • Evaluate the model representation of halogen processes and ozone utilising measurements from past field campaigns.
  • Perform model experiments to quantify the halogen budget (iodine, bromine and chlorine) of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.
  • Quantify the impacts of reactive halogens on lower stratospheric ozone and ozone trends.
  • Where appropriate you will:

  • Participate in national/international meetings, conferences and workshops to present the results of the project to a wider audience and to learn about current advances in the field.
  • Write research papers and other publications.
  • You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role is contingent on external funding which, at this time is due to come to an end on 31 August 2025.
