About This Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for three Senior Research Assistant/Principal Research Assistants to undertake team-based research in a high achieving, multidisciplinary and collaboration focused environment at the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR). The Institute's mission is to undertake transformational solution-focused research to address new and emerging challenges facing Australian society, with a particular focus on public policy, health, and education. ISSR is not a traditional academic organisational unit – it is largely self-funded with a strong focus on Category 2 and 3 contract research and Consultancy, which is used to build the workforce and support the research activity. All staff are required to contribute to the contract research and Consultancy activities.
The positions will work on a range of projects, beyond a narrow research specialisation, and primarily on externally commissioned research projects. These projects will be in multidisciplinary teams and often in collaboration with non-university stakeholders from government, industry, the not-for-profit sector and end-user communities.
You will provide key inputs to and manage the implementation of small to medium-sized research and evaluation projects, and coordinate key components of larger scale projects. The positions will also involve evaluating existing programs, developing evaluation frameworks, developing evaluation measures, and designing and refining policy responses.
Key responsibilities will include:
HEW Level 6
Project manage components of projects, including liaising effectively and professionally with external clients and collaborators, as well as staff in ISSR, to deliver projects on time and to budget.
Contribute to the design and implementation of research projects and evaluations, including coordinating inputs from other people, monitoring progress to meet deadlines, and reporting results, ensuring adherence to strict reporting guidelines.
Contribute to developing surveys (including programming online surveys) and other data collection instruments (e.g., interview topic guides, participant information and consent forms) and submitting ethics applications.
Carry out quantitative data analysis (including advanced statistical modelling) and/or qualitative data collection and analysis.
Contribute to presentations, reports, and academic publications to a standard appropriate for a range of external audiences (e.g., government, industry and community sectors, clients or funding bodies).
Contribute to professional submissions for funding, including tenders, proposals, quotations and competitive research grant applications.
Participate in research team meetings and provide support to research team leaders where applicable.
Other duties as reasonably directed by the supervisor.
In addition for HEW Level 7
Project manage small-medium research projects, or components of larger projects, including liaising effectively and professionally with external clients and collaborators, as well as staff in ISSR, to deliver projects on time and to budget.
Take a leading role in the overall design and implementation of research projects and evaluations, including coordinating inputs from other people, monitoring progress to meet deadlines, and reporting results, ensuring adherence to strict reporting guidelines.
Supervise and lead the development of surveys (including programming online surveys) and other data collection instruments (e.g., interview topic guides, participant information and consent forms) and submitting ethics applications.
Supervise and carry out quantitative data analysis (including advanced statistical modelling) and/or qualitative data collection and analysis.
Write presentations, reports, and academic publications to a standard appropriate for a range of external audiences (e.g., government, industry and community sectors, clients or funding bodies).
Lead and contribute to professional submissions for funding, including tenders, proposals, quotations and competitive research grant applications.
Develop and strengthen networks with clients/potential clients and key stakeholders, building the profile of ISSR and developing business opportunities.
The three positions are full-time, fixed-term position for up to three years at HEW level 6 or HEW level 7.
At HEW level 6 , the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871 - $91,158, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $99,300 - $106,655. annually.
At HEW level 7 , the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $93,254 - $101,680, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $109,107 - $118,966 annually.
About You
HEW level 6
Completion of a degree in sociology, psychology, social sciences and/or health or an area of applied research, with subsequent research experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
Demonstrated project management skills and experience in managing components of research and/or consulting projects.
Evidence of good communication skills in the research context to manage relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, and work collaboratively.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in social research and evaluation, using quantitative research methods and/or qualitative methodologies with a strong appreciation of mixed methods approaches to research and evaluation in the social sciences.
Experience in compiling ethics applications, contributing to the development of surveys and other data collection instruments (e.g., interview topic guides, participant information and consent forms).
Experience in contributing to writing research reports, academic publications, and producing other quality outputs for diverse audiences to translate the research and achieve impact.
Programming and analytic skills using statistical software such as STATA (preferred), R, Mplus, SAS and similar packages for quantitative analyses. Experience using software such as NVivo or other structured approaches for qualitative analyses and literature reviews and Qualtrics for survey programming.
In addition, successful HEW level 7 candidates will demonstrate

Demonstrated advanced project management skills and experience in managing contract research and/or consulting projects.
Evidence of strong communication skills in the research context to manage relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, coordinate and motivate researchers to meet deadlines, and work collaboratively.
Demonstrated experience in leading projects in social research and evaluation, using quantitative research methods, qualitative methodologies, and/or mixed methods approaches to research and evaluation in the social sciences.
Experience in leading ethics applications, the development of surveys and other data collection instruments (e.g., interview topic guides, participant information and consent forms).
Experience in preparing tender documents and/or research proposals, writing research reports, producing academic publications, and producing other quality outputs for diverse audiences to translate the research and achieve impact.
High level of programming and advanced analytic skills using statistical software such as STATA (preferred), R, Mplus, SAS and similar packages for quantitative analyses. Experience using software such as NVivo or other structured approaches for qualitative analyses and literature reviews and Qualtrics for survey programming.
Desirable
Good knowledge of relevant policy areas, including one or more of education and labour market, health, and social policy.
Experience in undertaking commercial research and consulting.
