The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath is looking to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Reader in Mathematics (Associate Professor).

This is a part of a plan to appoint three new academic staff to grow our world-leading research expertise in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Probability and Data Science. We expect that for the two other positions, one will be at the level of Professor and the other one at the level of Lecturer (Assistant Professor).

About the role:

We anticipate that the appointee will engage with impact-aligned activities in the department including our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training ( SAMBa) and the Institute for Mathematical Innovation ( IMI).

We expect that one of these positions will support research and teaching in the emerging area of Mathematical Machine Learning.

About you:

We particularly welcome candidates with experience of delivering impact and facilitating knowledge exchange through collaborations outside academia.

All candidates should be able to demonstrate their potential for achieving and sustaining a leading research programme that integrates into one or more of the existing research groups in the Department.

They should be active in developing and submitting competitive applications for external funding.

They should be committed to pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and in supervising graduate students.

About us:

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has over 70 academic staff from all areas of mathematics.

Its research activities are supported by our Centre for Doctoral Training ( SAMBa ) , which has currently over 80 PhD students. In addition, the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) promotes and supports cross- campus research activities, industrial and international collaborations in all areas of mathematics and statistics.

Various research centres such as the Centre for Mathematical Biology (CMB), the Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data (MAD), the Centre for Networks and Collective Behaviour (CNCB), and the Centre for Nonlinear Mechanics (CNM), provide focus in interdisciplinary collaborations.

Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provides for a high quality of life, together with proximity to Bristol and excellent transport connections with London.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Silver award and has a wider Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan as part of our commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment for all our students and staff. We are working to improve the balance of both gender and ethnicity in the Department, and particularly welcome applications from women and people of colour.

More generally, applications from any groups currently under-represented in academic posts are warmly received.
