The Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science (FLoV) at the Faculty of Humanities has around 100 employees and a teaching volume of about 350 full-year students. It hosts several major international research projects, and educates philosophers, linguists, language technologists, theorists of science, and teachers in philosophy at at all levels of university education.

Like most Swedish philosophy departments, we distinguish between practical and theoretical philosophy, with courses taught separately and separate degrees awarded.

Subject area description

Theoretical Philosophy

Theoretical Philosophy examines the nature of mind and external reality, our scientific and everyday knowledge of that reality, as well as different ways of representing and reasoning with that knowledge in language and thought. Its core areas include metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science. The teaching and research we conduct at this Department cover all of these core areas. Our researchers are actively involved in research collaboration, research networks, and externally funded national and international research projects.

Teaching in theoretical philosophy primarily includes campus teaching in first, second and third-cycle courses in theoretical philosophy, but also online courses (joint with practical philosophy) in addition to courses in philosophy for students in the teachers' education program. Currently, teachers in theoretical philosophy also regularly teach in the BA program in Liberal Arts, the MA program in Communication, and the Teachers' education program.

Methodologically, the teaching and research conducted in theoretical philosophy is in the analytic tradition, broadly conceived.

Job assignments

Work duties include research, teaching, and administration.

Research : The successful applicant is expected to conduct and publish research in analytic theoretical philosophy at a competitive international level in their area(s) of expertise. They are also expected to apply regularly for external funding for research projects, national and international, to build research networks and collaborate with researchers both at and outside the Department, and to contribute to the subject's research environment by, among other things, actively participating in its weekly research seminar.

Teaching : The successful applicant is expected to be able to teach some variety of analytic theoretical philosophy first-cycle courses (e.g., philosophical method, history of philosophy, epistemology, logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind) and second-cycle courses (mainly elective courses on topics closely related to research conducted by our staff). The successful applicant is also expected to supervise BA and MA theses. Duties may also include teaching third-cycle courses, supervising doctoral students, teaching online courses (joint with practical philosophy), teaching in the teachers' education program, in the BA program in Liberal Arts, and in the MA program in Communication.

Besides lecturing, evaluating, leading seminars, and supervising, teaching also involves teaching administration, including course and curriculum development.

Courses are taught in either Swedish or English.

Administration : Besides research, teaching, and teaching administration, other types of administrative tasks may be included. Among these are work on quality development and work environment-related administration at the department or faculty level.

The successful applicant is expected to participate actively in workplace meetings, departmental conferences, and other internal meetings. Please note that the successful applicant is expected to be physically present in Gothenburg to perform most of their tasks.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, 4§ of the Higher Education Ordinance (link to English translation here, and link to Swedish here) and the appointment procedure of the University of Gothenburg (link to Swedish PDF here). To be eligible, candidates must have completed their doctoral degree (or equivalent) and have demonstrated teaching expertise.

Successful applicants who lack university pedagogy education as well as equivalent experience must take the relevant courses at the University of Gothenburg during their first year of employment.

Successful applicants must be able to teach in either Swedish or English. They are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment

The basis for assessing employment as a senior lecturer is specified in Chapter 4, §4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (link to English translation here, and link to Swedish here) and in the appointment procedure for lecture positions at the University of Gothenburg (link to Swedish PDF here).

Teaching and research skills will be equally weighted in the assessment of candidates. Administrative experience is also a desired qualification.

The applicant is expected to possess expertise in one or several of the core areas of analytic theoretical philosophy. Documented ability to produce and publish research of high international quality, as well as credentials that indicate the ability to secure research grants are especially important in the evaluation of research skills. Weight also will be given to: a) the ability to plan and organise research, b) the ability to communicate one's own research, and c) leadership experience. Part I of the application (Academic Portfolio I) should describe the applicant's research specialization, plans for future research, and fit with the existing research environment.

The applicant is expected to have demonstrated skills and experience in teaching and supervision in core areas of analytic theoretical philosophy in the first-cycle of education. Experience in teaching and supervision in core areas of analytic theoretical philosophy in the second and third-cycles of education, although not a requirement, is highly desirable. The applicant is also expected to have proven skills and experience in teaching administration, including course-, program-, and curriculum planning and development.

We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to our subject area both academically and pedagogically, and who has the personal qualities required to collaborate within a small team and more widely within the University to support the development of the whole department.
