Fashion at Middlesex University has a well-respected heritage in practice and research across the disciplines of the fashion industry, with many alumni enjoying successful design careers in leading international fashion houses or founding their own labels. The Fashion programmes also maintain established relationships with the fashion communication industries.
Middlesex University has invested heavily in state-of-the-art studio and workshop facilities, and fashion students (from Foundation Certificate to PhD level) work alongside many other Visual Arts, Design, Performing Arts and Media cohorts in a dynamic community within the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries.
The Design Department is looking to appoint an academic to join the Fashion Directorate as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Fashion Visual Cultures. The role typically will be held by an experienced or developing practitioner and academic with a background in one of the diverse discourses which intersect with fashion and visual culture.
We are looking for an individual who will be committed to developing and nurturing research-led teaching around their field to empower the students through an inclusive curriculum. The role holder will have knowledge in areas such as: histories and theories of fashion; critical theory in contemporary design; practice, cultural studies, gender studies, queer studies, postcolonial, decolonial and diaspora studies, race, the body and performance, craft, manufacturing, globalisation, curation, sustainability, sociology of fashion, the politics of inclusion and diversity and associated fields of research, related to fashion.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of visual cultures content appropriate to all three years of undergraduate teaching in BA Fashion, BA Fashion Communication and Styling, and BA Fashion Marketing, focusing on the interrelations of critical thinking and studio practice.
You will be joining an existing team within the Design Department who deliver high quality teaching to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level in areas relating to fashion histories, fashion theory, and the critical contextualisation of fashion practices.
