Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Medicine's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, is seeking a Scientist II in the Laboratory of Integrative 'Omics.

The successful applicant will assist the PI to oversee operations in the research lab including supervision of research staff and trainees. The primary role of the Scientist II will be to use strong project management, communication, and leadership skills to enable execution of project milestones and keep stakeholders informed throughout project lifecycles. In addition, the Scientist II will carry-out dry-lab genomics research, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results. He/she will survey literature and implement new cutting-edge analysis methods as well as assist lab members in their application and interpretation.

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, design and conduct research and present findings.
  • Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversees a research laboratory comprised of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Accountable for planning and allocating resources, preparing budgets, monitoring progress, and keeping stakeholders informed throughout project lifecycle. Milestones will comprise completion of multi-omics analyses including but not limited to whole-genome sequence, transcriptomics, metabolomics and proteomics data and dissemination of findings as presentations, manuscripts, and grants.
  • Collaborates with students, other trainees and team members on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects.
  • Teaches and advises on rigor of analysis and reproducible research.
  • Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters.
  • Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication.
  • Participates in writing of grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment and/or systems.
  • Keeps up to date on advances in the field by reading the literature and implementing new approaches.

  • Salary Range $74,100.00 - $97,400.00 Annually

    Requirements

  • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience
  • OR M.D. and Master's degree and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Master's degree and six (6) years of related experience
  • OR Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of related experience
  • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

  • PhD in a Genomics, Bioinformatics, Genetic Epidemiology, Molecular Epidemiology, or related field.
  • Key Skills

  • Strong project management skills using Asana, Microsoft Teams or similar.
  • Strong programming skills in Linux and R.
  • Competent efficiently executing jobs using cluster management systems.
  • Experience with cloud computing.
  • Strong writing skills evidenced by published manuscripts.
  • Ability to translate research findings and see the big picture understanding implications for project next step.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Experience mentoring graduate students and other trainees.
  • Comfortable communicating and presenting in both large team (20-30 project members on zoom call) and small team (day to day meetings with local team) settings.
