Resident Zone Engineer


Onsite: This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.

The Role

The Resident Zone Engineer will be part of the Vehicle Systems General Assembly Execution Team and will work out of the Fort Wayne Assembly Plant to facilitate the effective execution of projects within General Assembly. The Resident Zone Engineer will provide technical expertise, project coordination, on-site resource management to execute new programs, model changes, and current production improvements.

Based on business need, the Resident Zone Engineer can expect to remain on site at a manufacturing facility for up to three years. As assignments are completed and business needs are realized, the Resident Zone Engineer should be flexible to commute to other assignment locations and/or can expect to relocate to a new location.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Support new vehicle launch at the assembly plant which will include various shifts and long hours during construction and launch events.

  • Single point contact for tooling/equipment issues, concerns, and possible continuous throughput improvement ideas/projects. Provide technical direction and project management oversight to suppliers, contractors and/or plant maintenance.

  • Work closely with Lead MEs, Resident Engineers (Automation & ME), Plant Launch Teams, to understand concerns and contribute toward the resolution of issues to ensure project objectives and deliverables are completed.

  • Travel as required for mockups, build events, design, and build of tooling and equipment as well as equipment validation phases of the tooling at strategic suppliers or within assembly plant.

  • Maintaining accurate Tooling Status List for shipment and installation to meet project milestones. Ensure all tool designs are data-banked and spare parts information is available to plant.

  • Plan, estimate, and evaluate new manufacturing processes and equipment for installation. Provide manufacturing input to Manufacturing Planning Studies and EWO's, CR/DN that will impact Assembly Plant. Conduct plant floor walks with IEs and Contractors to understand scope of work.

  • Integrate into the existing plant meeting structure to represent VS. Attending weekend work planning and validation meetings, plant layout reviews, throughput improvement, and operations meeting.

  • Work with Compartment Manufacturing Engineers to provide input on build strategy for future product and drive any error proofing features into product designs based on past lesson learnings.

  • Utilize standardized work for Safety including Safety Observation Tours, G-Risk Assessments, and G-Comply process to ensure safe tooling, equipment, and processes.

    Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing environment with GA experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing / Mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Vehicle assembly plant/program launch experience with successful individual achievements or strong team-based achievements.

  • Extensive knowledge of General Assembly tooling systems, engineering techniques, manufacturing processes, Global Launch Process, and Vehicle Development Process.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with Plant personnel, Manufacturing Engineering Personnel and Vendors / Contractors.

  • Demonstrated high level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult.

  • Demonstrated strong project management skills and experience in tool design and build, installation, and follow-ups for continuous improvements.

  • What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience in application of math-based processes (such as TeamCenter).

  • Familiar with manufacturing cost estimation process and financial reporting.

  • Assembly plant experience in Production, Plant Engineering/Maintenance, Quality, or Industrial Engineering
