This is a fantastic opportunity be part of the Defence Trailblazer for Concept to Sovereign Capability - a collaborative partnership between the University of Adelaide and UNSW. This opportunity is also advertised by UNSW.

Defence Trailblazer are working with Industry Partner, SRC Aus to recruit a Research Fellow Level B. The position will be located at The University of Adelaide.

Traditional Electronic Warfare (EW) relies on descriptors for classification of detected radio frequency transmitters. The generation of these descriptors require a panoply of techniques, mixed with accumulated experience, resulting in an ad hoc technology stack. Effective as these techniques have been in the past, they are vulnerable to a proliferation of new technology and tactics in the EW search space, as new modes of operations of radio frequency equipment emerge in increasingly complex, congested and contested spectral environments. With recent advances in machine learning across multiple fields, the time is ripe for a thorough re-examination of the signal sensing, processing and information generation techniques underpinning EW.

The Project will combine machine learning software and novel sensor hardware to develop the next generation techniques in EW that is small, lightweight and capable to processing multi-domain in multi-discipline signals in contested, and complex EW environments.

Reporting to Theme Lead the successful candidate will have excellent communication skills to work with relevant academics, researchers and students across UoA and UNSW.

To be successful you will need:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of: electronic warfare, radars, sensors, telecommunications, machine learning.
  • Demonstrated strong programming skill in Python, MATLAB or equivalent.
  • Possess strong analytical skills and ability to formulate novel approaches to problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct experimental trials and process data arising.
  • Experience or demonstrated capability in working with industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.
  • Qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification preferably at a postgraduate level with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • The successful candidate may be required to hold or attain an Australian government security clearance.
  • Knowledge and experience in the higher education, Defence and/or defence industry sectors is highly desirable.

The university has four campuses, three in South Australia: North Terrace campus in the city, Roseworthy campus at Roseworthy and Waite campus at Urrbrae, and one in Melbourne, Victoria. The university also operates out of other areas such as Thebarton, the National Wine Centre in the Adelaide Park Lands, and in Singapore through the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre.

The University of Adelaide is composed of five faculties, with each containing constituent schools. These include the Faculty of Engineering, Computer, and Mathematical Sciences (ECMS), the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of the Professions, and the Faculty of Sciences. It is a member of the Group of Eight and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university is also a member of the Sandstone universities, which mostly consist of colonial-era universities within Australia.

The university is associated with five Nobel laureates, constituting one-third of Australia's total Nobel Laureates, and 110 Rhodes scholars.
