Research Associate ChARM Group (Fixed Term)

Research Associate ChARM Group (Fixed Term)

The Department of Psychiatry is looking for a committed and enthusiastic post- doctoral Research Associate to join the team from 1 September 2023. The applicant will undertake the statistical analysis of linked administrative data combining clinical mental health records and the national pupil dataset to explore the interface between mental health and education. Improved understanding these factors will facilitate a targeted approach to early intervention and prevention of mental health problems as well as supporting children and young people to cope better in school. We are particularly interested in someone with experience complex statistical analyses or working with relational databases or administrative datasets. The role of the successful applicants will be to undertake these analyses under the supervision of Tamsin Ford, Simon White and Rudolf Cardinal (Cambridge), but there are opportunities to link with colleagues doing similar work at the Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (Johnny Downs).

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health team is expanding rapidly with an emphasis on applied epidemiology, as well as intervention development and evaluation. The successful applicant will be at a relatively junior level but will have the opportunity to play an active part in shaping this research programme and supporting more junior staff. We are particularly interested in someone with experience of research or practical work with children, young people in health care or education settings.

The methods applied by the team include secondary analysis of large epidemiological datasets, mixed qualitative and quantitative observational studies, economic evaluation systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials. The research is inherently translational and multi-disciplinary, and involves strong links with psychology, paediatrics, education, epidemiology, trial specialists, statisticians, health economics and basic scientists. Though we are looking for an applicant at a junior level, one who has only recently completed their PhD, we envisage that they will eventually become involved in all aspects of this work.

Applicants will have a PhD in Epidemiology, Psychology, Neuroscience or Medical Science and be expected to have obtained ONS Accredited Safe Researcher prior to taking up the post.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2024 in the first instance.
