Research Assistant/Associate in Strengthening University Spinout Ecosystems

and Metrics (Fixed Term)

The University of Cambridge Policy Evidence Unit for University Commercialisation and Innovation (UCI) has become a leading UK centre providing robust evidence for university research commercialisation policy and practice. Reflecting our successes we have received investment from Research England (UKRI) to sustain and expand the Unit.

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate to work on data-driven projects aimed at improving our understanding on how to strengthen entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystems to accelerate the production of high potential university spinouts to inform public policy and technology transfer practice. This is a topic of significant interest for the UK government and policymakers around the world.

We are looking for a researcher with strong quantitative skills to help expand and deliver our spinouts work programme. This includes developing a prototype national registry of university spinouts and demonstrating its value to stakeholders, developing approaches to capture the health and performance of university spinout ecosystems, and delivering data-driven studies to inform public policy and technology transfer practice.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role include:

  • A PhD (or be close to obtaining one) in a relevant discipline, or relevant research experience equivalent to a PhD
  • Experience of delivering data-driven projects to inform decision-making, and in assembling datasets integrating together multiple data sources to underpin analyses
  • Strong motivation and interest in delivering robust evidence for policy on research commercialisation
  • Excellent written skills and ability to communicate complex concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively to deliver projects
  • Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent research experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

    Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £28,929 - £33,348 Research Associate: £35,308 - £43,155
