The System Engineering Organization is a high performing, multi-disciplined group, home to the technical leaders on every product in the organization. The Systems Engineering team is recognized in R&D as critical in achieving technical success and on time execution of new product developments. System Engineering's team mission is to guide iRobot's development of robotic systems, platforms, modules, and technologies by leading the interdisciplinary program teams through technical trades, risk focused activities, performance validation test development, and launch.
What You Will Do:
iRobot is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer with subject matter expertise in the selection, qualification and support of batteries and their use in complex systems. As a systems engineer on a consumer robot development team, you will be a member of a project leadership team and ensure that the performance of the integrated product meets or exceeds the needs and expectations of the customer. An essential part of your role is to lead cross functional teams in system and subsystem architectures, requirements, design, execution, and validation. You will leverage your skills and experience to evaluate tradeoffs and define the best technical path forward. You will lead the team through translating the voice of the customer, requirements development, theory of operation, trade studies, pragmatic risk management, integration, trouble shooting and test. You will work at the intersection of hardware and software in a dynamic team atmosphere while balancing customer needs and technical trades. You will help guide business leaders and technical leaders to generate realistic and ambitious product goals. You will help define hardware and software architectures and participate in creating program development plans. You will lead your teams to drive technical risk reduction.
To Be Successful You Will Have:
The ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of lithium-ion batteries, including their charging methods and their protection both at the pack and system level, as well as a strong working knowledge of the other technologies and subsystems embodied in mobile, navigating, connected robots. You have technical depth in one or more of the core disciplines (software, mechanical, electrical) and broad working knowledge of the other two. For technologies that are new to you, you have the skills to quickly ramp up through independent self-teaching and/or engagement with Subject Matter Experts. You have developed expertise in systems engineering methods and demonstrated depth of knowledge in some of the technologies relevant to iRobot products. You have a strong technical voice, and you are respected by your team. You lead by example, and you provide direction through a combination of leadership, collaboration and buy-in. You also have experience with building the right consumer product, based on customer knowledge and strong technical leadership.
Qualifications:
Broad technical knowledge including many of the following topics: Embedded systems, hardware - software interactions and dependencies, interfaces, optical sensors, Wi-Fi, navigation, power systems and motion control.
Proven, skilled leadership of cross functional teams
