Hybrid: This is a Hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work offsite but also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility. This position requires an employee to be onsite 3 times per week.

The Principal Robotics Engineer is responsible for supporting and reinforcing the adoption of Robotics Software Engineering across the Manufacturing IT organization to improve productivity and efficiency in the Manufacturing space.

Working with Manufacturing Engineering business partners, the Principal Robotics Engineer will identify, evaluate, and adopt rapid iterative and incremental robotics software solutions. The ideal candidate can embrace, execute, and apply transformative robotic technologies, simulations, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and turnkey solutions.

  • Define and adopt GM Manufacturing IT Robotics capabilities

  • Identify opportunities to update and/or streamline GM Robotics Engineering processes together with Manufacturing Engineering SMEs

  • Track emerging technologies in the industry, and provide technology recommendations, risk assessments, trade studies, and analyses

  • Human-robot interaction

  • Define and develop machine learning and deep learning solutions in real- world environments

  • Computer vision solutions in real-world environments

  • Advanced Motion Planning

  • Ability to digest, design and deploy solutions based on research artifacts

  • Simulation

  • Designing solutions at scale (minimize operational overhead) End-to-end understanding of systems and interfaces, so solutions can be built to fit within constraints

  • Additional Description

    Required qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or other Engineering field; or equivalent experience

  • Extensive hands-on experience in the industry of robotics or academic experience

  • Knowledge and experience with linear algebra, computer vision, and the overall software development process as part of a team.

  • Experience with industrial robots and industrial robot programming (FANUC, KUKA, Universal)

  • Experience working with a variety of vision sensors (such as Photoneo), and especially depth-capable sensors and the associated point cloud outputs

  • Experience with robot safety systems

  • Development experience in C, C++, Java, Python, and/or OpenGL in a Linux environment

  • Experience with ML/DL, Computer Vision, Visualization and Simulation

  • Preferred skills:

  • Sound analytical skills and the ability to think outside the box

  • Comprehensive math understanding

  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) and MoveIt

  • Design experience with SolidWorks for modeling mounts for robot sensors

  • Development experience with edge computing devices, like Jetson Nano

  • Proven experience in cloud technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes, and High-Performance Compute (HPC) clusters

  • Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Keras

  • Experience with Pandas, PySpark, and Big Data
