STS-1 Postdoctoral Researcher – BioPhotonics Optical System Designer

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

Role Description

The BioPhotonics group at Tyndall National Institute invites applications for a dynamic postdoctoral position in the areas of photo disinfection and endoscopy based imaging. The position is co-funded through the EU MedPhab pilotline for photonics-enabled medical devices to support fast-paced industry-led research projects. The selected candidate will work closely with our industry collaborators and directly contribute to the research, design and development of innovative photonics medical devices.

Responsibilities

  • The candidate is expected to take a lead role in driving the industry-led research and development activities within the defined project
  • Communicate directly with collaborators on the project progress
  • Ensure timely completion of tasks agreed with collaborators
  • Preparation of deliverable reports
  • Designing advanced fibre-coupled lights sources and illumination systems
  • Optical modelling such as Zemax ray tracing to optimise system design
  • Characterisation of optical sources and systems
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post
  • Essential criteria

  • Have a PhD (or about to graduate) in Biophotonics/Photonics
  • Strong background in designing optical systems for applications in Biophotonics
  • Proven experience with fluorescence spectroscopy, including hands-on lab experience and handling of biological samples
  • Evidence of experience with optical modelling tools for ray tracing (e.g., Zemax) and light-tissue interaction (e.g., Monte-Carlo)
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Good planning, organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage in the wider research activities of the BioPhotonics group
