Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

The above full-time NERC-funded post is available, on a fixed term basis, from 1st February 2024 to 31st January 2026.

The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Neill Mackay. The successful applicant will join the recently funded EXPLANATIONS project investigating the role of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) on the uptake of carbon in the North Atlantic.

The post will involve the application of novel numerical and modelling techniques to studying the processes of carbon uptake in the North Atlantic Ocean over the last ~30 years and presenting the results of the research both orally at project meetings and international conferences, and in writing in the form of peer-reviewed papers.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to work independently, in collaboration with others on the project, to advance scientific understanding, present information on research progress and outcomes, and communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline, and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to understand the scientific background underpinning the research, including physical and biogeochemical oceanography; assimilate information from the relevant scientific literature; and apply problem solving skills to tackling the project objectives. Strong mathematical and programming skills are essential.
