Offer DescriptionTowards a more equitable protection of vehicle occupants: combining human body models and metamodeling techniques to improve safety.
The final goal of the research is to create a method to help develop safety systems that protect everyone in a vehicle accounting for their their differences. The approach will use a combination of mechanical simulation (finite element and human body models) and metamodelling / machine learning techniques.

Dates: position open until filled. Duration: 3 years
Background: Continuous improvements of the protection systems inside vehicles (seat belts, airbags, seats) have contributed to the reduction of the number of fatalities and injuries due to road accidents. Future improvements may come from more robust, inclusive and equitable protection systems. An idea is to simulate the diversity of occupants (sex, age, height, weight, postures adopted) and crash conditions (severity, frequency), formulate an objective function and then to optimize the system across all conditions.
State-of-the-art human body models that can be morphed and positioned to represent the human diversity are expected to play a role in that vision. However, using HBMs and adding new parameters to the design, optimization and assessment processes would substantially increase the computational costs.
Methods often labelled under the broad categories of metamodeling or machine learning can be used to tackle such issues. Examples include interpolation on surface responses, kriging models, model order reduction, or transfer learning, etc.
Objectives: the overall objective will be to evaluate and if needed adapt methods to reduce computing costs to the case of the design and optimization of occupant protection systems based on simulations with HBM. The study will be broken into different scenarios of increasing complexity and associated methods will be identified. Potential benefits of the methods will be quantified, both in terms of safety and computational cost. The thesis will include short stays at both industry partners (Autoliv, Gothenburg, Sweden, and LAB PSA Renault, Nanterre, France) to help formulate the problem and transfer the results.
