Offer DescriptionLocation: SLIDE team (https:// slide.liglab.fr), part of the LIG Laboratory, a CNRS UMR 5217 joint research unit (450 people). The team is located on the Saint Martin d'Hères campus, accessible by streetcar from Grenoble.
Other benefits: - 44 days annual leave - Partial coverage of complementary health insurance costs. - Subsidized catering available on campus - Partial reimbursement of public transport costs.
The thesis will be co-supervised by Silviu Maniu (Professeur des Universités, SLIDE team, LIG, Université Grenoble Alpes) and Pierre Senellart (Professeur des Universités, Valda team, DI ENS, ENS, Université PSL). The PhD student will be able to collaborate with Pierre Senellart by video-conference and through research visits to Paris.
The aim of this thesis is to scale the performance and usability of a provenance- and uncertainty-aware database management system. The system is based on ProvSQL, an open-source software package developed, among others, by the two thesis co-supervisors. It is an implementation and extension of the state-of-the-art in data provenance and probability management, and takes the form of a plug-in for the free PostgreSQL DBMS,. Although ProvSQL already includes many features, it is still not entirely usable, especially on a large scale. Scaling ProvSQL up and making it more usable is not a simple engineering task, but requires new fundamental research to be developed, carefully implemented within the constraints of the data management system, rigorously tested on benchmarks (such as TPC-H 2), compared with the state of the art and competing systems (such as GProM for provenance management or MayBMS for probability management). The purpose of the thesis is also to propose new application cases for the system.
