In the 1970s, the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA) granted validation to the degrees conferred by the college. The college acquired Herefordshire and Worcestershire College of Nursing and Midwifery in 1995. In 1997, the degree-awarding powers of the institution were affirmed by the Privy Council and its name was changed to University College Worcester. The institution received the status of a university in 2005 and was given its current name. In 2010, the university was given the power of awarding research degrees by the HM Privy Council.

The university has four sprawling campuses scattered across Worcester in the UK.
