  • About the Role The Manager, Intellectual Property Commercialisation will lead and support activities and provide expertise in the following areas:

  • Managing the IP portfolio, monitoring the performance of invention intake and facilitating the development of inventions;
  • Overseeing the performance of invention intake and due diligence, including technical, inventorship and ownership identification of core novelty, market application and competitive advantage;
  • Determining the appropriate mechanisms for the protection of IP including patent prosecution for inventions deemed patentable and suitable for licensing;
  • Advising on patentability, structuring of patents, developing and updating patent databases and reminder systems;
  • Documenting and negotiating technology commercialisation relationships with external parties;
  • Raising awareness and educating Swinburne staff on IP, IP protection and commercialisation pathways.
  • The Manager, Intellectual Property Commercialisation will work closely with colleagues across the Swinburne research and innovation ecosystem including:

  • Research staff, especially research leaders and inventors;
  • Swinburne Research teams in the functional areas of major initiatives and proposal development and research contracting and grants management;
  • Research engagement, translation and commercialisation functional areas including Industry Research Engagement Team members and other teams in the Innovation and Enterprise portfolio;
  • Legal office.
  • About You To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Demonstrated and relevant commercial/legal experience (preferably in the private sector), with specific practical involvement in technology innovation and commercialisation across digital solutions, AI/Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Industry 4.0, or Clean Tech / Deep Tech.
  • Understanding of processes for intellectual property capture and protection across key international jurisdictions (especially the countries parties to major treaties and harmonisation initiatives).
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team- environment, to develop and implement management processes and to follow through on tasks to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of government funding programs (at both state and federal levels) available to facilitate IP commercialisation, industry development and collaboration between industry and research organisations.KRA 2
  • Understanding of contract research, intellectual property capture and commercialisation processes as conducted in Australian Universities.
  • Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably in law and/or a relevant scientific discipline. Additional intellectual property, patent attorney, business or management qualifications/experience would be highly regarded.

    Swinburne University of Technology (often simply called Swinburne) is a public research university based in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne in order to serve those without access to further education in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Its main campus is located in Hawthorn, a suburb of Melbourne which is located 7.5 km from the Melbourne central business district.

    In addition to its main Hawthorn campus, Swinburne has campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area at Wantirna and Croydon as well as campuses in Sarawak, Malaysia and Sydney.
