DUTIES

As the Manager, Ancillary Retail Services, you are the leader of retail services for the campus bookstore and print services and are accountable for all aspects of operations. Bookstore operations include course materials, general merchandise, and contract sales; both in-store and web-based. Print Services operations include the main print shop/copy centre and the institution's central copier multifunction device management.

As the leader you will create customer experiences that enhance store loyalty and deliver measurable results for each business unit. Responsible for managing all aspects of each business unit including staffing, marketing, product and production research, inventory management, talent acquisition, staffing, administrative procedures, budget administration and fiscal viability. Responsible for developing strategic goals, measurable objectives, and evaluation methods to ensure services align with the missions and goals of the university. In addition, fosters relationships with external vendors and community members.

This is a highly collaborative position that works closely with many internal departments and student groups to support events, initiatives, and specialized services. In addition, the position fosters relationships with external vendors and community members to optimize profitability, develop new revenue streams and represent the University.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Forecasts, develops, and implements a strategic direction for the bookstore and print services, with policies and procedures in the areas of customer service, human resources, financial and budget to ensure that goals and objectives are consistent with TRU's policies and vision.
  • Contributes to the capital and operational budget needs and establishes key performance indicators and benchmarks, including financial and space utilization analyses, in line with university, retail and wholesale industry operations.
  • Manages the bookstore and print services staff including hiring, training, motivating, evaluating and discipline. Directs, coordinates, and coaches the development and implementation of quality customer service and financial goals to all supervised personnel.
  • Establishes, monitors, and maintains internal controls to ensure the maintenance and safeguarding of related TRU assets.
  • Monitors and analyzes materials management within the retail and wholesale operation, ensuring transparency, ethical and sustainable purchasing practices, and maintenance of appropriate inventory levels.
  • Maintains currency in product knowledge, industry advances and technology, merchandising and consumer trend innovations and the evolving requirements of the TRU community.
  • Ensures a proactive customer satisfaction approach by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and provides appropriate follow- through.
  • Responsible for stand-alone complex software applications. Liaise with other university departments and external partners for software support and development.
  • Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through ongoing staff training.
  • Participates in University-wide committees to establish customer service standards and administrative plans and policies.
  • Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.
  • Establishes a network of peers within other universities and industry organizations to exchange ideas and improve expertise.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS Education:

  • Undergraduate degree; preferably in commerce, procurement, management, marketing, public relations, communications or in a related field.
  • Experience:

  • Five (5) years of experience in a retail sales environment or inventory management role (preferably in a post-secondary or academic environment).
  • Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in maintaining systems in a computerized, decentralized environment including working with inventory management systems, retail management systems and point of sale systems.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting, training and supervising staff, preferably in an unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated customer service focus and understanding of best practices working in a retail environment.
  • Proficiency using financial and inventory management software, POS systems (WinPrism preferred, Print Shop Pro preferred) and MS Office products. Ability to gather and analyze information and present in report format.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing budgets with the ability to understand agreements, policy, guidelines, and regulatory framework.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees at all levels of the university as well as vendors and other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to use sound judgement.
  • Ability to work independently as well as mentor and guide a team of staff.
  • Thorough understanding of end-to-end supply chain management.
  • Excellent mathematical, analytical, organization, sales and negotiation skills with exceptional time and project management abilities.
