Provide support for multiple large-scale Linux computer systems and security- focused initiatives in a 24×7 production data center environment. Assist in configuring and supporting UVM's enterprise server and storage environment, including hundreds of Linux servers, VMWare ESXi, and petabytes of SAN storage. These systems support all aspects of server computing at UVM including research, academic, and administrative functions. Support Linux server hosting needs for departmental applications, and assist in operating system upgrades to ensure UVM's Linux environment stays up-to-date and secure.
This position provides automation of services through scripting to manage and monitor services, ensuring consistent configuration across services and thousands of users. The Linux Systems Engineer will participate in support services such as system tuning, troubleshooting, security, capacity planning, business continuity, system documentation, and other related services. They will collaborate effectively with other team members, paying systematic attention to detail, and engaging in careful planning and judgment as any change to system-level software can potentially impact thousands of users.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or technology-related field, or equivalent IT work experience.
Experience with Linux operating systems and familiarity with networking.
Experience with at least one systems programming language (C, Python, Perl, Rust, etc…) and software version control.
Excellent customer service experience.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Ability to maintain focus and professionalism under pressure.
Desirable Qualifications
Linux troubleshooting experience.
Understanding of security in a Linux environment.
Experience with configuration management systems.
