General Motor

Linux Site Reliability Engineer

Description

About the Role:

As a Linux Site Reliability Engineer you will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, and successful operation of technologies within the Compute Product Solutions domain. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the smooth functioning of cloud platforms and related systems.

General Motors is expanding its Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team and is looking for skilled engineers like yourself to join us in developing and operating the infrastructure and services that drive our goals towards a more electric and autonomous future. As a Linux Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), you'll help build a meaningful engineering discipline, combining software and systems to develop creative engineering solutions to operations problems. Much of our support and software development focuses on optimizing existing systems, building infrastructure, and reducing work through automation. You'll join a team of curious problem solvers with a diverse set of perspectives who are thinking big and taking risks within the Compute Product Solutions domain. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the smooth functioning of Linux platforms.

You will follow established installation guidelines, configure technologies to meet specific requirements, and deliver results within business timelines. Additionally, you will monitor systems, perform maintenance tasks, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective actions to ensure ongoing operational efficiency. As a technical resource, you will contribute to innovation projects, while occasionally providing operational support.

We are seeking candidates with broad knowledge of technologies in the Unix / Linux domain, including a solid understanding of general IT concepts and how technologies interact. Your ability to leverage available resources to solve problems is essential. While limited knowledge of peripheral domains is also desirable, proficiency in Linux and experience with improving dashboarding and leveraging automation technologies will be highly valued.

If you have a background in scripting languages such as Python, Ruby, or Bash, or familiarity with automation platforms such as Ansible or Chef, along with a dynamic and collaborative approach to teamwork, we encourage you to apply. The ideal candidate will have experience in infrastructure management and a strong passion for maintaining and enhancing a dynamic enterprise hybrid-cloud environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and maintain scripts, applications, or automation jobs to monitor system activity and performance of the Cloud Platform and related systems which help reduce toil and drive improved efficiencies
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues affecting the functionality and performance of cloud platforms.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including updates, patches, and backups.
  • Implement and configure cloud platform technologies within the assigned domain, adhering to standard installation recommendations.
  • Serve as a technical resource on assigned projects, providing expertise and guidance and ensure successful delivery of on-time projects
  • Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, with site reliability culture and principles and how to implement best practices into a platform.
  • Candidates should have a strong understanding of infrastructure components such as compute, storage, networking, monitoring, and security, while understanding how to manage these technologies across a hybrid-cloud environment.
  • Candidates will be expected to be strong troubleshooters, self-motivated, and have good project management skills demonstrated through excellent communication and collaboration skills, which will be required when solving complex cross-functional issues. Candidates should have a desire for continuous learning and be willing to fail fast in the face of challenges.
  • Desirable:

  • 3-5 years of experience with observability tools (Grafana, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Datadog, Splunk), CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitLab, Terraform), and be familiar with container and container orchestration platforms such as ECS, Kubernetes, OpenShift, PCF, and Docker
  • Hybrid:

Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite an average of three (3) days each week.
