Laboratory and Field Senior Technician
The Department of Geography has an opening for a Laboratory and Field Senior Technician (LFST), to join the small and collegial Geography Science Laboratories (GSL) team, whose work ensures the successful day-to-day operation, management and maintenance of the Department's field equipment and laboratory facilities. The role holder will work collaboratively alongside another LFST, and under the supervision of the Geography Science Laboratories Manager (GSLM), to support academic-led research activities and the design and delivery of laboratory and field teaching at all levels.
The LFSTs coordinate laboratory bookings and field equipment loans, ensuring that digital systems and protocols are up-to-date, and that spaces and equipment are well maintained and readily accessible. The LFSTs facilitate the safe use of the laboratories and field equipment by staff and students, by providing the appropriate induction and training to prospective users. They are proactive in maintaining laboratory and field equipment, including stocking appropriate consumable items and engaging with contractors, to facilitate accuracy and precision in data collection and ensure the laboratories are a safe working environment for all.
They advise academic staff on technical and safety elements of practical teaching during the course design-stage, ensure the timely provision and set- up of equipment, assist in data collection, and demonstrate equipment and methodologies to researchers and students in the lab and field, as required. They support the promotion of physical geography research and teaching internally and externally via the coordination of, and participation in, laboratory and field-related activities during open day and outreach events.
They further contribute to the production and interpretation of data for academic-led research in their own specialist area(s) and undertake relevant training, under the guidance of the GSLM, to maintain and develop their skills as techniques and technologies needed to support the Department's research and teaching foci evolve. Working together, the GSL team provides specialist technical expertise that spans the Department's physical Geography research and teaching foci (see Further Particulars). For the current open position, candidates with experience in field and laboratory methods for palaeoecology and biogeography are particularly encouraged to apply.
The role may, from time to time and by agreement, require the provision of support for fieldwork elsewhere in the UK or overseas, including out-of-hours commitments and overnight stays. Where such work takes the role-holder beyond their normal working hours, this will be compensated either by time off in lieu or paid overtime, to be agreed in advance with the Geography Science Laboratories Manager.
Please refer to the Further Particulars for the qualifications, skills and experience required, as well as the role key responsibilities.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
