IT Engineer (Servers and Storage) - Infrastructure Systems Administrator

Overview

The Information Services division (UIS) at the University of Cambridge seeks to appoint an Infrastructure Systems Administrator for a permanent position within the Servers & Storage team. In this role, you will build on your existing knowledge and develop skills in new enterprise technologies to support the University's IT infrastructure, while working within a supportive team.

The Servers and Storage team provides a wide variety of IT infrastructure to run services offered to the entire University. This role supports and develops the operation of core infrastructure, with a focus on VMware hypervisor and VMware Cloud Foundation, Storage, Backup, and will benefit from your previous experience of Windows Server. There will also be the opportunity to work with private and public cloud technologies, web technologies and databases. The Servers and storage team also administers Linux-based services and some exposure to Linux will be beneficial.

The role requires an enthusiastic person with good communication, organisational and problem-solving skills who cares about running University- scale, reliable systems, automated systems.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work within a team to support and enhance and transform our core IT server infrastructure - both physical and virtual
  • Support key technologies in server, virtualisation, storage, and software
  • Ensure that business continuity measures are implemented and maintained to minimize the impact of systems failure
  • Monitor, diagnose and proactively fix issues
  • Own small projects or sub-projects associated with the improvement of infrastructure
  • Implement and maintain automation in systems to administer systems and services at scale.
  • Ensure that systems and procedural documentation is maintained and accurate
  • Work closely with people across the department, including software engineers, networks engineers, security staff, database administrators, project managers and service teams.
  • Skills

    The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience working with the following products and technologies:

  • Virtualisation technologies (We use VMware but experience of any hypervisor will be useful)
  • Storage and backup administration
  • Windows Server systems administration.
  • Backup software (we use Veeam but any general backup system knowledge will be useful)
  • An understanding of how the different layers of IT interoperate, from networking up to the application/service level.
  • An understanding of automation and its uses. Practical experience would be beneficial
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and an analytical approach to problems.
