Here at the Union, we provide services, opportunities, and facilities for our diverse membership of over 35,000 students. With students at the very heart of all we do, the Students' Union exists to represent students' academic interests, help them to look after their wellbeing and ensure we give our students quality opportunities during their time at Sheffield Hallam.

Purpose of the job:

  • Accountable for the strategic development and operational delivery of our student democracy, representation, campaigning and advocacy, our student advice service and our student welfare and wellbeing work.
  • Focussed on increasing engagement and creating a sense of belonging and community; this role will own the creation, evaluation, and refinement of a strategic and operational plan with defined KPI's. Using data and insight to ensure that our Advocacy offer reflects the explicit interests and needs of the Hallam student community; whilst enabling us to track and increase engagement and satisfaction year on year.

    Sheffield Hallam University is located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire in England. This is one of the biggest and the most diverse of the universities in England. The university is sprawled over two locations. They have a city campus that is situated in the city center near the Sheffield Railway Station and the collegiate campus is almost 2 miles away in the Broomhall Estate off Ecclesall Road in south-west Sheffield. They are the 11th biggest university in the UK, out of a total of 167 having 30,815 students, out of which 4,400 are international and 4,494 are the staff. There are 708 courses.

    The former names of the university were Sheffield Polytechnic and Sheffield City Polytechnic. The university endowment is 0.52 million Pounds as of 2015. The Chancellor of the university is Helena Kennedy, Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws. The Vice-chancellor is Chris Husbands. Out of the total student strength, 24,455 were undergraduates, as of 2016-2017, and 6,365 were postgraduates. The university is associated with the Association of Commonwealth universities.

    There are many research centers and the faculties have been divided into four parts, namely the faculty of Science, Technology and Arts (STA), Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), Faculty of Health and wellbeing (HWB) and Sheffield Business School (SBS). They have 30 centers for research, including the Art and Design Research Centre and Biomedical Research Centre, among others. Helena Kennedy is the present Chancellor who is also a broadcaster, barrister, and the life peer of the House of Lords. SHU is the leading partner for Higher Futures, the Lifelong Learning Network (LLN) for Southern Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire.

    There are many notable alumni, including Kid Acne, who is a musician and artist, Roma Bubuniak, who is an artist. The notable staff includes Alison Adam, who is the professor of society, technology and science and I.M Dharmadasa, who is an applied researcher and physicist specializing in low in cost solar cells.
