Position Title Grounds Maintenance Department Grounds FLSA Non Exempt General Description

This position is responsible for maintaining university grounds, both on- and off-campus, through the use of various lawn care equipment. Additionally, this position may perform maintenance labor duties to support all other areas of Facilities Administration and Planning, as assigned.

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform full turf detail including the mowing, trimming and edging 90+ acres of campus, winter leaf clean-up and general maintenance of campus grounds including installation of new landscape design;
  • Perform daily trash detail on all campus grounds, empty all trash cans in assigned area; collect and deliver recyclables to the Florence Recycle Center; collect large garbage items and clean construction sites as needed;
  • Assist annually with campus Christmas decorations (i.e., storage, hanging, etc);
  • Operate turf management equipment (Weed-Eaters, Edgers, Mowers and Blowers);
  • Operate Pruning equipment (hedge shears, pole saws, chain saws, etc.) and other machinery as required ( fork-lifts, leaf machines, dump trucks, and other vehicles);
  • Maintain department equipment and vehicles including sharpening blades, changing oil and filters, cleaning, and other general maintenance tasks;
  • Keep drains and gutters on campus and drains immediately adjacent to campus free of debris to maintain clear water drainage and flow;
  • Responsible for landscaping maintenance of the Lion Habitat and cleaning litter box in the lion habitat;
  • Pressure wash campus surfaces as needed (sidewalks, buildings, lion habitat);
  • Maintain grounds of university sports fields and complexes (e.g., tennis, baseball, football, softball, and soccer fields);
  • Assist other campus departments as necessary (e.g., carpenters, plumbers, expediters, etc);
  • Perform general labor as necessary;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to employ the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE);
  • Ability to operate the various equipment safely;
  • Knowledge of and Ability to maintain equipment to ensure its safe and effective use (e.g., equipment lubrication, changing oil and filters, sharpening blades, sharpening chains, etc);
  • Ability to appropriately store and use chemicals safely (e.g., herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, fuel etc.);
  • Ability to maintain turf to a predetermined standard of maintenance;
  • Ability to prune and maintain shrubs to a predetermined standard;
  • Ability to prune and maintain trees according to the standard established by the ISA (International Society of Arboricultue);
  • Ability to plant annuals, shrubs and trees properly to ensure their health and growth;
  • Knowledge of and Ability to identify various problems in the landscape that need addressing (e.g.; Irrigation leaks, hazardous trees or limbs, dying or stressed plants, animal or pest damage, pedestrian circulation hazards, etc);
  • General knowledge of landscaping design and maintenance;
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions;
  • Ability to do heavy manual labor.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    High school diploma/equivalent is preferred.
