Graduate Research Assistant
Job description
Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY
The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant to support the work of Michiel Vos (ECEHH, ESI). This NERC funded full-time post is available immediately on a fixed term basis until 28th June 2024
Bacterial diversity is immense, and this extends to the diversity of species able to cause infections in humans. To study this biological variation, it is necessary to first obtain a complete overview of species diversity, which is contained in a large body of scientific literature.
The successful applicant will use methods from Machine Learning, Large Language Models and other Artificial Intelligence approaches to extract information on bacterial pathogens from published literature available on PubMed. This work, in collaboration with Fabrizio Costa (IDSAE), will result in approaches to build an automatically updated database of human pathogen species, and to extract for each species information relevant to their ecology and clinical presentation to produce a dataset to study their evolutionary radiation.
The post will include the development of an automated and robust pipeline that replicates the process of identification of human pathogenic bacterial species from literature sources previously carried out manually by MV and colleagues using ML document classification systems and an LLM based information extraction system.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will be educated to first degree level or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study or equivalent experience and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to develop software and scientific experimental design to solve a data driven natural language processing task related to information extraction from scientific literature. ..
