General Description/Position Purpose
Overview The Teacher Education Department at Shippensburg University is seeking strong, inventive candidates for the position of a master teacher in the 2nd grade classroom at Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School (GBLUES). This is a tenure track University faculty position on the Shippensburg University campus, beginning in August 2023.
The Department and the Program: A distinctive element of teacher education programs is the access to the campus lab school, the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School, the Bartos Child and Family Center and Shippensburg Head Start. The Luhrs School is a unique opportunity for candidates to observe master teachers and to gain classroom experience on campus. The Teacher Education Department offers 3 undergraduate pre-service programs (PreK-4, Special Education/PreK-4 and Mid- Level programs) In addition the department delivers post-baccalaureate Master-Level Programs.
2nd Grade Master Teacher Description Master Teachers are experienced champions of children with proven track records of success in the classroom. Master Teachers embrace innovation, are capable team players, demonstrate a growth mindset, work collaboratively to maximize student potential, and desire to continuously improve their own instructional practice. The second grade Master Teacher will be responsible for accelerating students' learning, and ensuring that they reach their maximum potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.
The primary responsibilities for this unique position are innovative teaching of 2nd grade students at the University laboratory school, serving as a productive member of the early childhood/reading committees and collaborating with initiatives in teacher preparation. Additional responsibilities are those included in the faculty contract and include service to the University and the profession, as well as engagement in scholarly work in the area of early childhood education. Teaching assignments may include nights and/or weekends. In addition, faculty members are expected to perform other duties as assigned in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement. Depending on qualifications, teaching University courses may be arranged.
Minimum Qualifications
A baccalaureate degree that includes a PreK-4 or K-6 certification, a master's degree and certification or licensure in literacy or a related field, at least 3 years teaching in an elementary classroom within the last 5 years, and evidence of continuing professional development. As part of a successful on- campus interview process, candidates will be expected to provide a demonstration of teaching effectiveness and evidence of understanding diverse populations. All candidates must furnish proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. upon appointment and must pass Pennsylvania ACT 34, ACT 151 and FBI Criminal History clearances.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supervising college students, an earned doctorate in literacy, or a closely related field; five or more years of teaching young children; earned tenure or eligibility for tenure in an education system (such as PK-12).
