General Information

Professional & Continuing Education (PCE) is seeking highly motivated individuals to join the unit as part-time instructors to teach 100% remote courses in the General Education program completed as part of the Adult Degree Program (ADP). The ADP is an interdisciplinary program designed specifically for adult students to complete the Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) undergraduate degree.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are sought for asynchronous, fully online courses in multiple fields, including but not limited to: human communication, composition, global history, literature, math/quantitative literacy, natural sciences, and wellness.

Available sections to teach starting fall 2023 with potential to continue. Fall, spring, and summer sessions will vary based on enrollment needs, and pay will be based on enrollment numbers.

Successful Candidates will:

  • Develop an appropriate syllabus.
  • Provide an inclusive learning environment that supports adult student success.
  • Maintain school-determined virtual office hours per week for each class.
  • Ensure timely management and response to electronic correspondence from students, administrators, and other school officials.
  • Lead discussion boards and engage students in relevant discussion and coursework.
  • Partner with Academic Advisors to address student concerns.
  • Maintain and submit accurate and timely reports for student grades/progress.
  • Deliver mid-term and final grades in accordance with the academic calendar.
  • Remain current with trends, techniques, and advances in distance learning.
  • Completion of a self-paced JMU workshop on online teaching is a condition of employment.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree with at least 18 hours in relevant graduate coursework.
  • Recent online instruction in higher education.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in serving an adult college student population.

  • Certificate or credential or coursework in online instruction or training from an organization like:

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on- campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
