As part of our expanding first opinion team you will be based in our teaching hospital helping to manage first opinion cases. You will also work at our offsite RSPCA clinic which delivers charity medicine teaching to clinical veterinary students across all years.

The Queens Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH) is a teaching and a referral hospital whose aims are to provide a comprehensive and demonstrably excellent clinical service across a range of species and disciplines for clients, undergraduate and postgraduate students and the veterinary profession in general. We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Nurse to join our First Opinion team at QVSH.
The role of First Opinion Nurse at the QVSH is varied, with tasks including general nursing, client communication, registering animals and booking appointments. It will involve supporting and liaising with Vets, Nurses, Students, and support staff in both the small animal wards and theatre.
The First Opinion Nurse will provide an efficient, co-ordination and collaborative nursing service to an excellent standard for the QVSH, managing an increased case load and research activities, to meet the needs of the service. They will work as part of the First Opinion team to provide supervision and case co-ordination of first opinion cases, medical nursing and administration duties linked to each case, perform nursing duties within the appropriate discipline and be expected to participate in occasional on call and weekend duties on a rota basis.
Triage and appropriate referral of cases from the RSPCA clinic will be required, as well as tasks such as dispensing medications, registering animals and booking appointments. General practice duties including locking and unlocking the practice, stock management, tidying and cashing up at the end of the day will also be carried out by this role.
There will be aspects of management of accurate pricing, invoicing and case finances with liaison internally and with several charities and 3rd parties.
This is a varied role where no two days are the same, so we are seeking individuals with a passion for nursing, with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, students and clients. The ability to work on your own initiative with minimal supervision is essential.
