Work Arrangements

The Sport Science Department in the Faculty of Science & Technology is seeking a Coordinator for their Post-Degree Diploma in Kinesiology Program.

This limited-term faculty coordinator position will run from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025, with possible extension to April 30, 2027. The position carries a two-section time release for the 24/25 academic year. This position may require travel between the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses.

The Role

The Sport Science Department at Douglas College offers a Post-Degree Diploma in Kinesiology, a Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching (BPEC) with available Kinesiology or Health Promotion concentrations, and a Diploma in Sport Science with optional Specializations in Kinesiology or Health and Recreation. Students can also complete a Graduate Diploma in Physical and Health Education. The Kinesiology Coordinator position is integral to the leadership team and student experience in the Sport Science Department.

The primary functions of the Kinesiology Coordinator are:

  • Coordinates all aspects of Post-Degree Diploma in Kinesiology (PDD KIN) administrative (admissions and graduation) requirements.
  • Coordinates all aspects of PDD KIN fieldwork operations, including placements, site creation and community partnerships.
  • Maintains and liaises with the PDD KIN Advisory Committee.
  • Acts as a part of the SPSC Coordination Team for assigned department work.
  • Responsibilities

    Administration:

  • Admissions: Provides advice on admissions to the PDD KIN program to Enrolment Services as needed; sets intake limits in consultation with the SPSC Chair and the Dean.
  • Provides advice to the SPSC Chair for scheduling of PDD KIN courses.
  • Consults with the SPSC department and the Dean about equipment requirements and specifications, and contributes to capital budget requests as part of the Operating Capital cycle to support program and course offerings.
  • Stays up-to-date with developments in the profession of kinesiology in order to maintain relevance and currency of the PDD KIN program.
  • Ensures that web sites, program brochures and all other advertising material are kept accurate and up-to-date, in consultation with the Marketing and Communications Office.
  • Liaises with the BC Association of Kinesiologists as needed (e.g., facilitates exams to be written at Douglas College).
  • Coordinates opportunities for ongoing professional development of kinesiologists in the community.
  • Maintains relationships with alumni to support development of a “kinesiology community” at Douglas College.
  • Completes the annual review for the PDD KIN program and supports the comprehensive review process as needed.
  • Attends SPSC Coordinator meetings and completes assigned duties.
  • Degree Advising

  • Listed as the contact person for the PDD KIN program. Receives and responds to emails/phone calls regarding entrance requirements, transfers, graduation requirements, etc. from potential and current students.
  • Liaises with the BPEC Coordinator to ensure that the Kinesiology stream courses are updated and remain relevant.
  • Represents the PDD KIN program at information sessions.
  • Fieldwork

  • Creates and executes plan to establish new kinesiology field sites and new site supervisors.
  • Supports ongoing relationships with fieldwork partners.
  • Creates and executes plan to follow-up with existing sites that are no longer taking students or have low ratings from student comments.
  • Coordinates with the faculty Fieldwork/Coaching Coordinator as appropriate in case of overlapping sites, common policies or procedures.
  • Coordinates with the Faculty of Health Sciences for placements in clinical settings within the regional health authorities.
  • Maintains a fieldwork database, including all contact information (students, sites, site supervisors, approving authorities).
  • Student placement: Manages placement of students and distribution of placement forms to students with the staff fieldwork placement coordinator. Ensures that annotated lists of placements are provided to instructors who will be teaching the fieldwork courses.
  • Collects and processes feedback from students and sites at the conclusion of placements.
  • Works with instructors of fieldwork courses to problem solve placements as needed.
  • Advisory Committee

  • Organizes a minimum of one annual meeting of the PDD Kinesiology Advisory Committee (two meetings is recommended) to report on program status and initiatives and solicit advice for program maintenance and improvement.
  • Communicates updates to the advisory committee as needed throughout the year.
  • Recruits new members to the advisory committee as needed.
  • To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

    The successful candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in the area of Kinesiology (or related field) (PhD preferred)
  • Teaching experience, preferably at the college or university level
  • Field experience in kinesiology and/or physical education, sport and coaching
  • Knowledge of Blackboard (or other online learning platform), Excel, and Microsoft; knowledge of Banner would be an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, staff, faculty and community partners
  • Proven ability to problem solve day to day issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with other coordinators and faculty on Department wide issues and with faculty on Fieldwork/Coaching issues
  • Able to work independently on projects
  • Ability to create and maintain a professional network relevant to student needs
  • Strong verbal, written, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, organize, plan and schedule, train and motivate and adjust to a changing environment

    Douglas College, founded in the year 1970, is one of the largest public degree-granting colleges located in British Columbia, Canada.
