Offer Description

Bivalve mollusks are characterized by an unusual pangenomic architecture, related to the presence of large hemizygous regions associated with dispensable genes subject to gene presence-absence phenomena. Research activities will focus on investigating the functional role of these genes in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis through an experiment designed to evaluate the effect of larval selection following exposure to different types of stress. Determination of parental genotype, coupled with an assessment of the frequency of observation of dispensable genes in surviving larvae, compared to a control sample not exposed to stress, will determine which genes contribute to significantly increased survival rates under the experimental conditions. The project will make use of advanced genomic techniques that will exploit the production and bioinformatic analysis of data obtained with next-generation sequencing platforms.
