Finance, Infrastructure and Commercial Services - Engineering and Direct Works

Summary of the role

Engineering and Direct Works are responsible for the planning, safety provision, adaptation and maintenance of buildings and associated services and for the development and maintenance of the University's estate within budget.

Engineering and Direct Works is responsible for carrying out an exceptionally diverse range of tasks. This includes but is not limited to legislative compliance; inspection testing; and reactive and planned maintenance of high, low, and extra low voltage commercial/domestic electrical systems. Fire alarms, emergency lighting, commercial and domestic electric and gas appliances. Mechanical plant installations (HVAC) including plumbing, and pressure systems.

The department also provides structural maintenance: carpentry and joinery; locking systems; bricklaying; painting and decorating and numerous other tasks. In addition, the team supports the day-to-day maintenance of the energy management system and supports setting up equipment and attending University and other external functions and events in the Great Hall, Lemon Grove, and for other temporary events across the University.

About you

The complexity and diversity of the workload require the team leaders to have developed exceptional organisational skills alongside the experience to manage multi-disciplinary teams and maintenance contractors.

The nature of the work and requirements of the services often require an urgent response where the post holder is required to make quick and decisive decisions to incidents and events such as, but not limited to fire, flood, total power, or heating loss, often without onsite support of others, to meet business and customer demand but always to maintain health and safety on a complex site of buildings. The ability of the Team Leaders to manage resources and motivate a workforce in an environment of constant change is critical to the success of this Service.
