Education and Instruction Librarian-Manager of Services & Partnerships Unit (Faculty-Associate)

The University of Texas Southwestern Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center seeks to hire an Education and Instruction Librarian-Manager of Services & Partnerships Unit. The Manager is responsible for the operational management and supervision of all areas and aspects of the Services & Partnerships Unit to provide and grow our library services by developing innovative information solutions to primarily serve the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Health Professions, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and other areas. This individual will join the library's Research and Education Librarian team to engage with UT Southwestern's academic community. This librarian will also work as an information expert alongside faculty, staff, fellows, residents, and students in the School of Public Health, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and/or the University of Texas Southwestern Health System.

The successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a highly flexible work environment, build partnerships with user communities primarily engaged in research and clinical activities, and develop new services and curricula. The team is currently embedded in medical, allied health, graduate school, and graduate medical education. The Manager also oversees UTSW's professional development opportunities for the library in order to amplify the university's mission. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Library Services.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in the planning and implementation of strategic goals and objectives for the library that support the university mission, values and goals
  • Assumes responsibility, with the AVP for Library, including instruction, strategic planning, organizational development, assessment, and outreach.
  • Works across academic departments and student programs to embed library services into courses, events, and co-curricular activities.
  • Provides teaching and research assistance at the library as needed.
  • Builds cooperative relationships with the campus community, community-at- large, regional library consortia, state and national library associations, and educational development associations.
  • Oversees all departmental operations including but not limited to supervision of all employees, submission of state and national reports, grant acquisition and management, and contracts management.
  • Develops and implements Library policies and procedures in collaboration with library faculty and staff to support the library's vision, mission, and strategic priorities.
  • Assures the Library is an inclusive space for learning that is responsive to patron needs and supports the university's priorities to enhance the student experience.
  • Promotes diversity and the understanding and respect for all peoples and cultures.
  • Support the School of Health Professions and the Graduate School in the research life cycle. This includes but is not limited to instruction, mediated searching, and reference.
  • Enhance related library guides and other educational content.
  • Advise on related collection acquisitions.
  • Maintains knowledge of current issues and trends in academic research medicine information services, teaching, and learning such as instructional technology and design, information literacy, assessment, and copyright and fair use.
  • Coordinates and provides professional development in the form of workshops, learning communities, or other training to support library staff as they learn, practice, and assess equity-minded, innovative, high impact, and inclusive pedagogies.
  • Fosters opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to share their experiences and expertise, as well as to celebrate successes as they engage each other to improve teaching and learning.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with faculty, staff, students, and the community.
  • Deliver in-person and online course-integrated instruction, orientations, and workshops.
  • Provide direct assistance to users through in-person and virtual consultations.
  • Serve on Library and departmental committees and/or task forces as appropriate.
  • Ensures quality library and learning resources are provided to students, faculty and staff and communicates their value.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

    The following requirements represent the minimum qualifications necessary for an individual to satisfactorily perform each essential duty and be successful in the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the duties.

    To be appointed as a non-tenured Faculty-Associate:

    Master's degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution and:

  • A minimum of three years full-time equivalent experience in library services to include leadership experience in a supervisory role
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working in an academic health sciences or hospital/biomedical library or public health environment
  • One year of experience providing instruction on library-related resources and concepts
  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience creating instructional and outreach materials utilizing LibGuides, Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as D2L, Camtasia, Mediasite, or other tools
  • Creativity in approaches to active adult learner engagement and ability to deliver instruction in an online environment using MS Teams, Zoom, or other tools.
  • One year of experience with mediated searches in biomedical databases using evidenced-based practice concepts.
  • Demonstrated interest in using emerging technologies and software to create solutions that address the evolving information needs of a research enterprise.
  • The ability to thrive in a new environment and work with diverse people and topics.
  • Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, presentation and supervisory skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with library management and discovery systems
  • Knowledge of current practices and trends in the use and integration of emerging technologies to deliver information resources, services, and instruction in an academic library.
  • Excellent ability to use personal computer, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
