Position Overview

Position Summary

Winston Salem State University (WSSU) Director of Community Standards and Civility assumes primary leadership across campus for facilitating, organizing, and coordinating all aspects of student conduct, student rights and responsibilities and judicial hearings process. Coordinates revisions of the Student Code of Conduct; Tracks and maintains reports of all active disciplinary and sanctions including community service hours, educational sanctions and outreach activities; Maintains electronic judicial database and the UNC Suspension and Expulsion database; Develops methods of resolving disciplinary cases; Manages student and organizational conduct cases including formal hearings, mutual agreements and mediations; Recommends and imposes sanctions designed to foster student learning and development; Supervises maintenance of all student conduct records/reports, Clery case data, DAP reports Incorporates an educational approach and restorative justice philosophy related to community standards and civility.

The Director of Community Standards and Civility oversees all department operations related to community standard and civility and structures, and comprehensive educational programming to address the current conduct trends and best practices to support services under the supervision of the Office of the Dean of Students. Serves as the lead in the training, advisement, and education of students, faculty, staff and administrators with regard to the Student Code of Conduct, student rights and responsibilities, and other community standards.

Work is performed under minimal supervision with evaluation based on the effective operation of the administrative function. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

Department Required Skills

Leadership experience in a university setting, ability to develop, review and rewrite policies and ability to develop and implement strategic plans in Judicial Affairs

Knowledge of higher education and student affairs are needed to carry out the responsibilities of the position. Experience in judicial affairs, problem solving and strategic planning

Ability to think and plan strategically, work collaboratively with others, establish priorities, develop and monitor cases, and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Ability to develop a vision, adjudicate alleged violation; assess best practices in judicial affairs, multi-task management

Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise; Records maintenance skills; Database management skills; Word processing and/or data entry skills

Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities

Ability to lead and train staff and/or students

Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials

Knowledge of office management principles and procedures

Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events

Knowledge of academic administrative principles and procedure

Must have strong interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Preferred Experience:

Master's degree in higher education/student services, counseling, or related area. Three (3) years (post-master's degree) of relevant experience in a higher education or related setting.

Background in advising/counseling students and prior work administering student conduct processes preferred.

This individual must be able to work independently, communicate effectively and creatively through written and oral presentations, and work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Experience with personal computer equipment and software to include Student database software.

Advanced knowledge of and experience with Maxient or similar student information platform.

Advanced knowledge in social media

Knowledge of student development theory demonstrated teamwork and familiarity with current practices and legal affairs related of judicial affairs

Demonstrate effective customer service skills
