General Statement
Founded in 1893 as Montana's land-grant institution, Montana State University has established a national and international reputation for excellence in undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and sciences, agriculture, architecture, education, engineering, health and human development, and nursing. Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean is the senior academic and administrative officer of the MSU Library and, as such, is responsible for working with senior administration, college faculty and staff in setting strategic, operational, and financial directions.
Consequently, the Montana State University Library seeks a creative, energetic, transparent, and respected leader to build on the considerable strengths and opportunities of the college.

1. Earned terminal degree 2. A record of accomplishment suitable for tenure in a discipline appropriate to the MSU Library 3. A record of progressively responsible administrative experience at a university that includes a similar degree of complexity 4. Academic administrative experience that includes budgeting as well as oversight for program development, recruitment and personnel evaluation and management 5. Evidence of commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education 6. Evidence of strong communication skills and a commitment to access, shared governance and the land grant mission

The MSU Library's next dean will possess a combination of professional experiences and personal qualities appropriate to the strategic priorities listed above. The successful candidate will demonstrate integrity of the highest order, an intellectual curiosity, and self-confidence balanced with humility, authenticity of character, and a strong work ethic. In its next Dean, Montana State University Library will give preference to candidates who demonstrate:
1. Management skills that include a clear ability to develop positive relationships with multiple constituencies within and outside of the college 2. Effective leadership of an academic unit under a shared governance model 3. Experience in effective strategic planning and assessment 4. An understanding of the emerging opportunities for creative activity/scholarship, within higher education 5. Experience with student retention planning and implementation strategies 6. A creative and approachable manner that kindles the innovative spirit of others 7. Ability to foster teaching, creative activity/scholarship, service, and professional development of faculty in a student-centered environment 8. Evidence of leading transformational change
