Hybrid: This is a hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work offsite but also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

The Role

Complex Litigation Counsel will be responsible for managing and coordinating activities related to the defense of both commercial litigation (class and individual actions), and product liability matters. The individual will be responsible for the pursuit of claims on behalf of General Motors and its various affiliates. Expect to participate in the selection of outside counsel and work closely said outside resources in the handling of each matter.

What You'll Do

  • You will ensure new matters entered properly into case management system including required TREAD data and litigation hold information.

  • You will Assign outside counsel based on nature of claims/defenses, geographic location, fee arrangement and GM policies.

  • Work with outside counsel on the development of legal strategies and execution.

  • Work with GM claims administrator, discovery team, and engineering resources on evaluation of claims and identification of any engineering safety issues

  • Timely Review case evaluations, briefs and motions submitted by outside counsel

  • Determine settlement value or trial recommendations for specific cases within established processes

  • Coordinate selection of litigation consultants, expert witnesses, and trial counsel

  • Partner with relevant outside counsel regarding deposition preparation and trial preparation

  • Provide advice and counsel to other GM legal teams and business groups as needed

    Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Law degree from an accredited college or university

  • Admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction in the United States and, if not admitted in Michigan, the ability to qualify for in-house counsel status in Michigan

  • At least 5 years of law firm or prior in-house experience in complex litigation

  • Ability to collaborate, build relationships, gain credibility, and partner effectively with others up and down a matrixed organization

  • Self-directed, solution-focused individual that with strong work ethic and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to achieve enterprise-wide results

  • Strong oral and written communicator with an aptitude for critical thinking and succinctly presenting the best course of action

  • Excellent computer skills, including advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Demonstrated commitment to compliance, integrity, and quality

  • What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Knowledge and understanding of automotive industry environment and business needs is a plus
  • Compensation: The expected base compensation for this role is: $150,900- $231,200. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

    Bonus/Equity Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
