BUSINESS MANAGER – Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc)

Australia's Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc) was established in 2010 as the industry-funded successor to the CRC for Construction Innovation (2001-09).

There are currently six integrated research programs managed by SBEnrc, those are:

  • Social Housing
  • Future Cities and Transport
  • BIM/Digital Engineering
  • Construction Waste
  • Sustainable Procurement
  • Green Energy
  • Your new role The SBEnrc Business Manager is responsible for managing the operational business management of the Centre and providing executive support to the COO/CEO with a wide range of tasks, including budgeting and resource allocation.

    The Business Manager acts as a liaison between the Centre and internal and external stakeholders to support the Centre's activities and objectives, ensuring efficient and effective operations management.

    This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and supports the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc).

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the daily operations of the Centre in support of the executive management, ensuring the effective delivery of services
  • Provide interpretation and advice to the COO and Centre staff on operational and regulatory matters
  • Support and assist the COO and CEO (and Board, if applicable) with development and review of strategic and operational plans and prepare briefing papers, draft reports and other relevant documentation
  • Identify and develop management information and benchmarking metrics on financial data, workforce planning, assets to contribute to informed discussion and decision-making at Centre level
  • Prepare and manage communications, across the Centre key internal and external stakeholders and partners
  • Liaise and work collaboratively with University service groups and develop and implement Centre services and processes as appropriate
  • Manage reporting, compliance and contractual obligations of the Centre in liaison with the Research Office at Curtin (ROC)
  • Act as Executive Officer/ Secretary for the Board and/or relevant committees
  • Manage and process project milestone payments as per the Centre's policies and processes
  • In collaboration with the COO and CEO, ensure that the Centre's commitments under the Centre Agreement (funding agreement) are met
  • Oversee the content management on the website and project communications and outputs via social media channels (YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn).
  • Coordinate and distribute the Centre's quarterly global newsletter
  • Develop, manage and monitor budgets, forecasts, business modelling and reporting on advice from the COO and CEO and in consultation with the School, Faculty and University's finance and research functions
  • Under the direction of the COO, provide leadership, guidance and management of professional staff, including effective recruitment processes, local induction, staff engagement, allocation of work priorities, performance reviews and development
  • Manage resources and activities to ensure projects are planned and completed to client expectations, and that the Centre fulfils its research targets and financial objectives
  • Coordinate research and consultancy proposals
  • You will bring to the role (Selection criteria)

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or extensive experience in business management within a complex organisation; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education training.
  • Strong skills in the Curtin accounting and financial reporting systems.
  • Strong understanding of financial and budget management.
  • Experience in business planning through detailed research and analysis on a range of issues and the ability to develop, implement and evaluate business improvement strategies.
  • High-level communication and negotiation skills and the ability to anticipate partner concerns.
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage and influence others. Build and maintain effective and productive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understanding of University Research Centres and familiarity with Australian Research Council standards is advantageous.
