Position Details

General Statement

Culinary Services Division (CSD), a component of Auxiliary Services, provides meals and specialty beverages for over 18,000 customers daily and is an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CSD proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, a commissary kitchen, 3 coffee shops and the Union Market retail operation, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery, and the Farm to Campus Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the bakery management staff the Baker II actively works in the production of fresh baked goods and breads that are served in the various concepts across campus.

  • Skillfully prepares a wide variety of baked goods (both scratch and pre- made).
  • Assists in production of specialty items such as artisan bread and pizza dough.
  • Mixes all icing, puddings, and toppings.
  • Ices products (cakes, doughnuts, etc) and provides decorative garnishing of finished baked goods.
  • Operates and is knowledgeable about a wide variety of large-scale and specialty bakery equipment.
  • Assists with directing and training staff full-time and student staff.
  • Monitors inventory, keeps records, and orders accordingly.
  • Assists with the cleaning, disposition and storage of foods, supplies, and equipment.
  • Analyzes and makes recommendations concerning potential mixing problems and new recipes.
  • Interacts with the Health Inspector to ensure all sanitation guidelines are being followed.
  • And contributes to the success of the department as an active member of the team while performing other duties as needed in support of the department's mission.
  • Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Progressive full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience working in a commercial bakery or high-volume bakery producing a wide variety of products or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience .
  • Experience operating commercial bakery equipment.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience directing/leading and training staff.

  • Open Rendezvous shift is normally :

  • Monday – Friday 5am – 1:30pm
  • Bakers may be asked to focus on certain areas of production: dessert and breakfast production, bread production, bagels and pizza dough, and packaging.

  • Occasionally be asked to work at special events outside, and inclement weather.
  • Possess a 4-hour sanitation certification or have the ability to become certified.

  • Normal kitchen, bakery, cooler, and freezer conditions.
  • Stationary or moving about for long periods of time.
  • Moving products and other related items up and down stairs.
  • Moving and placing containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Move about while stocking products.
  • Gripping handles on small kitchen utensils.
  • Performing repetitive motions such as, but not limited to, chopping, stirring, and serving.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
